Poor guy was feeling sorry for himself for being evacuated not expecting any gratitude, then he got the beers and realized what his sacrifice meant.

It's great how the mood suddenly changes when the beer appears.
Beer makes everything better.

One of the greatest, most emotional endings I’ve ever seen.

I love how the final shot of the film isn't the burning plane but a close up of one of the soldiers. Really grounds the ending in their emotions.

You’ve got to give credit to Harry Styles like. He did an amazing job, you wouldn’t even know that it was his first big screen movie ( One Direction movie doesn’t count) . He makes us feel sorry for Alex at the end because he feels so disappointed in himself. But at least he went to war and fight x

That moment when you see the guy holding the bottles makes me cry every time I watch this scene. Cause they were expecting to be treated like shit, but the people of Britain admired them for their courage and welcome them with open arms

A 4 minute and 45 seconds example of masterclass filmmaking. Absolutely stunning cinematography and score.

Dunkirk Ending Scene

Alex: "Hey! Where are we!?"
Kid: "Siding! You'll be pulling in in a minute!"
Alex: "What station?"
Kid: "Woking!"
Alex: "Grab me one of them papers. Go on!"
The kid gives Alex a newspaper. Alex grabs the paper and reads it.
CHURCHILL ADDRESSES DUNKIRK EVACUATION IN COMMONS
Alex: "Can't bear it. You read it."
Tommy: "Can't bear it?"
Alex: "They'll be spitting at us in the streets. If they're not locked up waiting for the invasion."
Peter walks into the Herald. He gives the editor a picture of George Mills.
Farrier glides the Spitfire over the beach, as he pumps the handle of the wheels.
Tommy grabs and reads the paper.
Tommy: "Wars are not won by evacuations..."
Civilian knocks on the window repeatedly.
Alex: "I can't look."
Tommy: "But there was a victory inside this deliverance which should be noted..."
Civilians clap to the arrival of the soldiers, while a civilian hands in two beers. Alex grabs them and passes one to Tommy, who continues reading.
Tommy: "Our thankfulness to the escape of our army must not blind us... To the fact that what has happened in France and Belgium... Is a colossal, military disaster..."
Farrier continues to pump the handle of the wheels, as the Spitfire almost reaches the sand.
Tommy (V.O.): "We must expect another blow to be struck almost immediately..."
The Spitfire accomplishes its landing. Farrier closes his eyes in disbelief. It is a beautiful sight. He then proceeds to shoot the cockpit with a gun flare.
Tommy (V.O.): "We shall go on to the end... We fall fight in France... We shall fight on the seas and oceans...
Peter and his dad read the newspaper. LOCAL BOY, GEORGE MILLS, JUST 17, HERO AT DUNKIRK. They both nod.
Tommy (V.O.): "We shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air... We shall defend our island whatever the cost may be -"
Alex, with food and beer on his mouth, interrupts Tommy.
Alex: "What?"
Tommy: "We shall defend our island whatever the cost may be... We shall fight on the beaches..."
Dead bodies are shown on the beach
Tommy (V.O.): We shall fight on the landing grounds... We shall fight in the fields, and in the streets... We shall fight in the hills...
The Mole is shown, helmets lying everywhere.
Tommy (V.O.): We shall never surrender..."
Farrier watches the Spitfire burn. It is a beautiful sight. German soldiers approach and take him away.
Tommy (V.O.): "And even if this island, or a large part of it, were subjugated and starving..."
Alex eats and drinks like there was no tomorrow.
Tommy: "Then our empire beyong the seas, armed and guarded by the British fleet, would carry on the struggle... Until, in God's good time... The New World, with all its power and might... Steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old."
The Spitfire burns on the beach. It is a beautiful sight.
Tommy's finished reading. He's speechless.
We see Tommy's face one last time before we...
Cut to black.
Credits.

I went to the Cinema to see this, at the end the entire audience just sat there stunned by it all, and then we all applauded. Not something that happens in a British Cinema. So bloody emotional. I am 75 years old and was in tears when I left.

Veteran here. I can't help but to see that at the very end of this movie, that kid reading the speech is devoid of all emotion, he's just reading such memorable speech but, based on his actions throughout the film, he could really give a shit about this "most honorable of struggles".

That kid, that soldier, has seen too much. I see this scene as how a PTSD ridden man just reads a piece of paper. The juxtaposition is clear. War, doesn't matter how poetic or seemingly "just" is death. Nothing but the worst of humankind

Watched this and Darkest Hour back to back and was so proud to be British. But you don't have to be British to marvel at the heroism of this event. It is merely the twin virtues of sacrifice and courage in the face of adversity on display here. No matter the context or your nationality, they're something which touches us all deeply.

Churchill's words, Elgar's music. The very spirit of British resolve and defiance in the face of seemingly impossible odds. Extremely cleverly done in this film

Dunkirk is one of my all time favourite films, my grandparents were alive in Dover, Kent during the Second World War so they saw a lot of the small ships set off from Dover harbour. And watched the film in IMAX with my grandad.

The town George comes from Weymouth is my home town. So it’s so weird seeing it on the big screen.

Dunkirk was a miracle accomplished by overwhelming sacrifice from the French and Belgium forces who stayed as the rear guard, the men who had to stay on that beach, the efforts of the navy, RAF, medical agencies such as the Red Cross, the planners in offices who worked the best way to get people home. And most importantly the average British sailor and civilian who was willing to go over knowing the risk and did it for there fellow country man.

Truly the greatest generation.

The music. Hans Zimmer did a bang up job of adapting Elgar's Nimrod from the Enigma Variations. It is such a beautiful piece of music.

The final shot cements Tommy as my favorite Nolan character.
