The 4th Century BC Tombs of the Pontic Kings, Amasya, Turkey
Filmed April 2009 - Please press "see more" for information

One of the wonders to be found in the lovely city of Amasya, in central Anatolia, are the Pontic tombs. These tombs carved into the rock date back to the 4th century BC. These tombs were used to venerate the Pontic kings and today we can find 18 empty graves. The location of these structures is great, since they are in a rock of a mountain that seems to protect the city. In order to get to the graves one has to climb steep stairs departing from Amasya.

Around year 183 BC Amasya was inhabited by Hellenistic people and became the capital of the kingdom of Pontus from 333 - 26 BC. So those carved arches seen from all over the town just above the Yesilirmak river are the royal tombs of Pontus kings.
