People don't give enough credit to the subtitles, they perfectly demonstrate the sheer agony and hopelessness of the guy. The pain is GENIUNE, until it shortly returns after just a few seconds of mercy, and, as if that wasn't enough, he finally screamed of PURE AGONY. Sonic really does not let that guy have any shred of hope for mercy.
