Moon Call -2D Animated Short

This was my postgraduate film for my masters at Northumbria University last year!
This was a solo project and I spent 3 months on it
it certainly shows my improvement as I see a lot of problems with it now but I learnt a lot from making this!

What is this animation about?
A lot of people have asked me this so I thought I’d add something about it though I am happy for people to make up their own minds about it

I essentially describe this short as “the duality of man but with cats bc I like cats”
But theres also a lot of personal feelings that went into this as well

Essentially the story is about a cat who finds a bird and wants to befriend them but also cannot help being harmful to the bird because they are a cat

The ending reveals the true outcome of this inner conflict the cat faces.

the entire time shadow the hedgecat was threatening ori and the cat forest with the bird near the end, i was thinking "there's no way the bird is actually going to get hurt. in every single animated short, the token Cute Friend never gets hurt. white cat is just going to break the ice and-" BOOM BIRD DIES

So many animated shorts are- while beautiful- predictable with a predictable moral, this is one of the few I’ve seen that surprised me and had me wondering what was happening next. It was also relatable in a way, not as a cat or magic, but with my own experiences. Sometimes you want to help someone and try to fix whatever’s hurting them, but you only negatively impact them in the end. That leaves you with the difficult decision to let them go, even if they’re suffering. - just kind of my own interpretation

This is incredible!! Your use of color here is stunning. And your ability to turn a seemingly simple internal struggle into something so artistic and a little psychedelic even. Is nothing short of admirable!

I think the cats were the representation of the cat at the end's fight between instinct to hunt and kill the bird and it's want to become it's friend.

The cat was trying to battle its predator instincts, but kinda lost.

....this is AMAZING ... like the lines bouncing with the rhythm and the colours shifting with the pitch ... ITS BEAUTIFUL... colours, lines and notes coming together to tell a story.

Holy crap, I feel like what happened at the end was something I finally can understand and that is so AMAZING AND EPIC--! This is so beautiful, damm - That was just so awesome I can't even put it into words. It's been a while since I watched the storyboard but yes the ending still hit me
