The red heifer sacrifice is actually planned to take place April 2024 during Passover. But the temple doesn't need to be built in order for the red heifer sacrifice, they just need the ashes available when the temple is ready to cleanse it. I dug a little deeper:

There are currently 9 priest descendants of Aaron who have specifically been kept away from coming into contact with a dead body so they are ritually pure to serve in the temple
The past 30 years they have already prepared all the copper vessels and instruments and furnishings for the temple
A rabbi purchased the Mount of Olives 12 years ago and the sacrifice is planned to take place there because it overlooks where the Holy of Holies was positioned in Solomon's Temple and because the cleansing ritual of Lev 19 was to take place on the outskirts of the temple
It is suggested that this might be one of the reasons Hamas targeted the area during Oct 7th to prevent the sacrifice but I have no clue if that is true
The current Muslim mosque doesn't need to be destroyed in order for the temple to be built, in fact, the open area near the wall is closer to where Solomon's temple was (I think) so a temple could be built alongside the mosque
Of course, that cannot happen with the hostility between Muslims and Jews over that part of land - but Daniel 9-11, Matt 24 and 2 Thess 2 links the 3rd temple alongside the antichrist who creates a peace treaty but then 3.5 years later in the middle of the tribulation, sets himself up in the 3rd temple as God.
This could mean that a peace treaty is made between Muslims and Jews to worship on the same Mount or that the land will be given to the Jews in order to build the 3rd Temple
Some rabbinic organizations don't think the temple needs to be a grand stone building like Solomon's, but a tabernacle tent like the Exodus one where the first red heifer was sacrificed.

So the red heifer sacrifice is the last thing needed before the temple, which could happen soon or in the future but either way it's crazy how close it's getting!

When you mentioned a person can't lean on them, I remember learning that brusing their skin can cause a white hair (and sometimes a black hair) to be produced on the heifer in the area of bruising. Then, they become unexceptable for sacrifice. 😮

Also usually all calf have an ear tag, it’s a very strict rule but it would have caused a blemish on the calves and it happens early but during covid something happened one day where the person was late due to virus and the calves weren’t tagged and so they can be used. The calves had to be over two years old and no older than three years and they will be turning three soon so it must be done shortly. A hamas leader recently said that their attack was partly due to the “detestable myth about the red heifers and the sacrifice” and people can argue with me about it all they want but you can look up their recording talking about it which anyone who is familiar with the religion battle going on over in Isreal can see why since not everyone can freely pray just anywhere over there. If you are Christian or Jew, you can’t pray on the mount. As Christians we know that sacrifices are not needed because Jesus was the sacrifice to end all but Jews believe this must happen for their messiah to come. Either way it will happen, it has to happen for the temple to be built and the Bible says it will happen and at this point over 70% of the prophesies in the Bible have to pass as it said they would. It will be one step closer to Christ return and once the abomination of desolation stands in the temple and professes he is like a God that is when we are told the end is here. Before that there will always be warts and rumors of wars but we are not to panic but we will see an increase like birthing pains, the closer to Christ’s return

From the best of my memory of all the biblical studies growing up, Yes, this is a sign of the end times, and it's actually bad and it's called the abomination of desecration, and this abomination has to take place before other things fall into place. I remember that was a sign my family and church always looked for to left them know it's time. My mother would always say, but the abomination of destruction hasn't happened yet, but when it does, it's the count down. Of course I'm always thinking about how the Real God would not want sacrifices in order to be pleased. Not even an animal. It is a disgrace to think the God of the universe would require such a barbaric thing to occur. This is just one of many things that proves that this is not the real God.
