We used coal fireplaces in England to heat the house when I was young. They were more efficient than the ones in the USA used for wood and much narrower front to back. There were fireplaces in every room but we only used the ones downstairs. They were made of iron so they probably absorbed heat a bit like a wood stove does. The one in the living room had an oven but it wasn’t used because we had a gas one in the kitchen. Also was freezing most of the time. I don’t remember them smoking except for the one in my parents bedroom upstairs. As I said those were seldom used anyway. We have a fireplace now but almost never use it. It does smoke a little sometimes. Not a Rumsford 😀

In general, it's probably a good idea to have smooth walls in the smoke chamber, but there is no way "stepped" or ragged brick, by itself, creates a draft problem. The Europeans and Russians pull the smoke up and down 15 feet and it still eventually drafts. What they do is 98% more impedance than a few ragged bricks in a smoke chamber.

How would one go about locating a mason that follows the proper standards?

If you were going to build a outdoor patio with a fireplace, would a rumsford be better? Or a standard fireplace?

If I just opened a chimney breast and there is a clean chimney, can I just light a fire and enjoy it, until I decide on what to do? It's about 100 year old.

Well, I am creating a Fireplace....but, not for heating purposes....only for Cooking and Heating Water thru Copper The Smoke Chamber walls should be angled....and Hot Air rises....the smoke follows and rides Hot Funnel it into the chimney the next the angled walls should be smooth....it is called air flow resistance....if it is smooth it flows faster out the

Early Modern English. Not old English. If it was written in old English you wouldn’t understand a word. Well, maybe a few!
