In 1999 I left a corporate position with a 250 million dollar company to start my own business, but before I did that I spoke with a lot of other small business owners about their feelings. opinions, and experiences since they started. Every one of them said, "I wish I had done it years earlier". Here I am 17 years later agreeing with them. Like you though, my wife thinks I've been retired for 17 years now, in spite of the fact that I'm bringing home more money than I ever did as a "Corporate Hotshot".

#OldGuyAdvice Be careful of turning your passion into your career, it may become just a job. Bill Dance gets tired of fishing, and Tiger Woods gets tired of going to the Driving Range.

I gave up my cushy job at the post office to go into law enforcement permanently. I had been working both jobs for a couple years straight when my (now ex) wife put her foot down and said she was tired of dealing with every problem at home on her own. She demanded I work as a mail clerk or police officer, but not both. The post office bored me severely. The other job was quite the opposite. My first couple months I survived two attempts to kill me. Both involved a badguy getting to his gun while I had no opportunity to shoot the badguy.

You need a lot of skill combined with a tremendous amount of luck to reach retirement age in law enforcement. I loved that profession. Unfortunately all it takes is one incident where a badguy gets one lucky shot and it's over.
