Giro d'Italia Stage 7 Highlights

On paper, stage 7 is another day for the sprinters. Take a closer look at the last few kilometres however and you’ll notice a devilishly steep ramp just 1.7km from the finish in Termoli. The ramp is only 200m long, but with gradients nearing 15% it’s a perfect launchpad for a daring Hail Mary attack. Whoever has the nerve to attack here is going to need to commit 100%, with the peloton breathing down their neck there’ll be zero margin for error on the run into the finish.

I'm new to cycling so I have a question I hope someone can answer. How is the time calculated? For example Valter is wearing the maglia Rosa but are there checkpoints that he's been passing through faster than others in order to hold the maglia Rosa? Because he's obviously not crossing the finish line first so how is he in first place? Thanks in advance!
