I only do this at home. I have an old branded vodka bottle and keep refilling it with the cheapest generic vodka. People who drink vodka can’t tell the difference anyway. Nobody has ever noticed over many years.

The state doesn't give a rat's butt about you getting cheated with cheap liquor, they don't want the bar buying a bottle from the liquor store and using it to refill their old bottle with a tax stamp on it.

We have a bar that pours every almost empty bottle into a clear bottle. It is basically a mystery shot. You'll have no clue if it'll taste good or bad, just that it's cheap and is whatever sells the most.

As a longtime ex-bartender, you’d be shocked how many places use well liquor in their call bottles.

As a bar owner myself, the issue is more on the health department side. This of course varies by state, Im in California for reference. It is illegal to marry bottles due to contamination. If one bottle has been compromised, then dumped to another, pretty soon whatever the issue is, will be spreading

Some states actually require you to destroy the bottle when it's empty.

It is also bad if someone gets sick or there is a recall. If you constantly refill containers, the data on bottle is no longer accurate to the liquid inside.

Worked in a pub in Ireland in my teens my job was at 1am I'd take 2 of the outer bottles of smirnof vodka take them upstairs and fill them with clear jugs of cheap vodka and they'd only be served to people who were already full drunk. Thankfully that place has since closed.

My friend worked at a really scummy bar that used to do just that. The owner would go buy Costco brand such as vodka then put it into Grey goose bottles

To be fair in an episode of bar rescue he touches base on this and does get into the fact that making a mix like you said is ok as long as precautions are taken.

It is illegal in Alabama to reuse the empty bottle for any reason. The law actully says the empty bottle must be distroyed.

I had a friend who used to bartend at Atanta Fish Market. He said his managers would come in with big bottles of SKOL Vodka and refill the Belvedere and all the other high end brands. He said the only time he got a complaint is when they accidentally refilled the vodka with gin. Absolute scumbag stuff.💯🤣

John was referring to pouring cheap liquor into premium bottles. He wasn’t talking about mixing custom drinks in a plain bottle. Give me a break.

But if I'm a scumbag bar owner....I'ma do the cheap bottle fill illegal or not. Thus the scumbag!

Well the thing is this actually happens fairly often. Same with watering. I’ve seen it myself when I bar backed.

I had a bartender friend also say that's why she scratched the empty bottles to prevent stuff like this

Had a local bartender that had me on speed dial. My "adopted" brother got into the habit of going there during the day and drinking more than he had money for. She would call me at work, I'd drive across town, grab a shot for me, and a pitcher of beer and play pool, while she'd point me out to him....
"Thank God you're here! You are like my guardian angel"...
Noticed that the Jameson shot started tasting God awful... she tried one, and spit it out... I went out to my vehicle and grabbed a new bottle of Jameson bought for the house, gave her one shot, she got the bar manager fired. He apologized to me before he left, said it was mostly for my one friend, because we were the only ones buying the Irish whiskey, that he'd let build up a substantial tab. Paid off my friends tab, got the bartender to write my name on the bottle, and she would let me drop off Guinness, that nobody else drank, that I would get for free upon visits, but leave tips on every one. Good times!!!
