Elder seems like one of the strongest base game Leaders. Just is not even a major downside as people ae rarely declaring tyrant. Combining Elder with Prison Wardens is a massively powerful combo that lets you fight over court cards with the sole purpose of collecting Captives. I think it combines especially well with the Gate Ports lore card to really double down on playing to the court. Gate Ports has the added bonus of building ships to keep powering Elder.

Do you influence once per battle where an opponent took a trophy/trophies?

In my opinion elder is a weak leader. It relies heavily on your opponents to gain any benefits. A smart opponent will be able to minimize the number of influence you get. The free influence is fine, but only really good if you are able to quickly secure, which is very dependent on specific turn order (and initiative). The lore cards which offer you a defensive buff (like predictive sensors) are not especially synergistic, since they deter your opponent from fighting you even more, which further reduces your ability to benefit.

Finally, the drawback against tyrant is very bad for this leader, since your ability will naturally help you to take extra captives (and often the playstyle of elder encourages you to reach out and tax opponents cities)... But you can't win much points on tyrant! All this adds up to a poor leader imo, definitely not worthy of an A grade
