VMware, vTPMs, and You: What You Need to Know

My #homelab doesn't have ANY Windows 11 VMs yet, and that's because to properly run Win11 in a VM, you need a TPM or Trusted Platform Module. Well, my virtual hosts don't have TPMs, so what's a guy to do? INSTALL THEM, THAT'S WHAT! (And that's what I did!) Come along for the fun!

In this video, Rich will walk you through what a TPM module is, how and where it installs in a certain Supermicro server, how to verify the TPM is seen by #VMware #ESXi, setting up a local key provider in #vCenter Server 8, backing up that local key provider, adding a new vTPM to a Windows 10 VM, verifying the vTPM is seen by the Windows 10 VM, and upgrading that Windows 10 VM to Windows 11.

Discovered your channel yesterday. Enjoying your posts. You don't actually need a TPM in your server to provide a vTPM to your VMs. Just add the virtual TPM device via the Remote Console once the VM has been created. The VM may need to be encrypted and using UEFI for this to succeed. Interestingly in Horizon (VMware VDI) you build the parent image with a vTPM, then remove it before snapshotting. During pool creation, you check the box that says to add a vTPM and Horizon does the rest. Again, no need to the physical device in the host. Since you're a vSphere guy, I think you would love Horizon, if you haven't tried it. I support it for a living, with around 40, 000 virtual desktops in our environment.

I am wondering if there is any way without a vcenter server, because i am using the free ESXi 8.0.1 for personal use, which costs nothing but cannot be paired with a vcenter.

2 years ago when Covid hit, the prices for these went crazy! they were over 4X's the regular price and I was so mad... now, 2 years later the TPM's have finally come back down to earth.... now the interesting part.... since the TPM is the same stayle as my old one, can I put a TPM 2.0 on a MSI 760GM-P35 motherboard which currently has a 1.5 version on it now.... on all my new builds I include the TPM in my builds. they are just as easy to get as they did 10 years ago!
