Gavin Luke - The Gift

Gavin Luke is an American composer who makes music inspired by nostalgia, nature, and the human condition. His diverse and prolific body of work spans an astonishing range of styles and traditions—from neoclassical to ambient, pop to jazz, EDM to film scoring. His music has tallied 470 million Spotify streams and 15 billion plays via sync in YouTube videos.

Raised in Minneapolis, Gavin was born with what he describes as “an obsession with music.” At age 7, he enrolled in classical piano lessons, following in the footsteps of his parents and his grandmother. In his teens, he absorbed and experimented with the works of Brahms, Mozart, and George Winston. After studying music synthesis and scoring at the Berklee College of Music, he earned a degree in psychology and moved to LA to continue honing his craft as a composer for film.

The naturalism embedded in Gavin’s approach is inherited from the new age composers who influenced him, and who themselves drew inspiration from the natural world. It is also rooted in childhood memories of fishing and hiking in the lakes and woods his family frequented in Minnesota. In Gavin’s compositional process, sounds, objects, and moments—a thunderstorm, for example—often evoke nostalgic associations from his youth. These recollections intermingle with the sound of the keys as he plays on his grandmother’s fully restored 1925 Steinway grand piano, kindling a fresh musical idea.

"Even in this state, notice how Artorias continues to seek out and kill corruptions of humanity.
He's still in there somewhere, but his legend can only live on with his death.
Only his fellow knights knew the truth but, they would take his soul and secret to the grave.
And while Artorias's soul was corrupted by the worst of humanity, it was the best of humanity that redeemed it.
And the Hero of Oolacile would disappear without a trace, almost as if they didn't belong. For in reality, they didn't.
And eons later, deep within an enchanted wood, behind two locked doors, and a troop of forest protectors, an ancient cat speaks the truth.
"The Legend of Artorias art none but a fabrication. Traversing the dark? Tis but a fairy tale."
Alvina is keen to downplay the Legend of Artorias because heroes and bandits have begun seeking out his grave. They would desecrate his legacy for the secret of Abyss Walking, and they may do harm to Sif, who in fact, Alvina helped to rescue when the world was still young.
Imagine what Sif is feeling when you cross paths again years later.
You're duty-bound to seek the Abyss, and Sif is duty-bound to stop you.
One of you will have to die, because Sif cannot give the Covenant of Artorias willingly.
Maybe in death, he can find his friend Artorias again."

Prepare to cry brought me here. Great piece! the ending wouldn't be complete without it. Now I've got to save this in a playlist for a rainy day.

"It's going to be alright my friend. In the end, you'll see your master once more and his legacy will live on. I will finish what he started."

It's really strange how Vaati affected this song for me (and more than likely a lot of others.)

Its a really beautiful piece on its own, but after watching his video, it has this new layer to it that gives you that feeling of sadness, Artorias, Sif, their sacrifices, etc. Its really cool how it can affect our enjoyment of this song more. Good job on this!

Came across this on Spotify. A truly wonderful piece. Though I don't know with what intentions Gavin composed this but it will help me to endure hardships longer

on one hand this is a relaxing music indeed, on the other hand i came from VaatiVidya's prepare to which makes this music in particular a soul crushing melody of melancholy and sorrow combined. To be honest i have mixed feelings for this particular music, earned a sub sorry i need to sort out my feelings.

I listen to music to get inspiration for my art. I didn't see the title of the song but I sat down drawing a small child getting a large fruit from a tree. Funny how things work out :))))

In a world of greedy gods and treacherous traitors was a single knight and a great wolf that stood at the gates of the abyss and challenged an inevitable darkness. Though, at every task did the great knight Artorias fail, he delayed the abyss. Enough so for a hero from a time beyond to arrive. What I love about Artorias is the message his life and death convey. To be good can lead to loss but a victory in the bitter and very end...

Your musis is so beautiful. Tears take away any words .. and im caught up in this wave of sweet sadness and i suppose a kind of relief that music like this is still being created. The world needs to be more musically driven .. and finding your music today is nothing short of a blessing. Thank you
