Movo HM-M2 Dynamic Omnidirectional Mic Review / Test

Today I review a budget version of the Rode Reporter and Electro Voice 635a, the Movo HM-M2. This is a handheld omnidirectional dynamic microphone with a long handle. It is good for interviews and reporting in the field where you don’t want to focus on microphone technique or switching a mic between yourself and the interviewee, but not much else.

I actually use this mic for in-game and post-game interviews. It's been great for use in loud arenas and it cuts the background pretty well. You can hear it on the Carolina Cobras facebook page if you want.

Bought 2 of them, the Boya version. Have to say I am very pleased with it's sound quality and how it cleans up my noisy Saigon environment (it's never quiet in Saigon, except now while we are in lockdown for covid.)

I've had this mic for a couple of years. I have yet to find a windscreen that fits it. It should come with one.

I actually really enjoy the tone of the microphone, I’d say the rode reporter is slightly more favorable but if I’m just getting started I’m definitely gonna pick this up

I’ve had good luck with Movo’s camera mounted mic, and I believe it has a lot of “bang for the buck”. It’s not amazing, but very acceptable. So, I’m thinking that the Movo HM-M2 might be nice to have in my kit for the specific 2 person interview where it’s not practical to pass the mic back and forth. I’ve done a lot of interviews, and I really like to have control, so having control of the mic and passing it back and forth as I talk to my interviewee works quite well. As you demonstrated, the SM58 is far superior to the MOVO mic in this situation, but entirely useless unless you pass it back and forth.

My question is, so these have more sensitivity in the upper range to help voices cut through background noise easier?

So, i have an unusual need for this type of mic, i intend to use it in a reporting fashion but i was curious if i could effectively use this as a replacement for my Blue Yeti for recording gameplay, be it that i find a stand i can mount it to successfully 😀

Would you consider this mic to sound better than the Yeti? And, if i were to go this route, would ot be better to spend the extra $50 and get the Rode Reporter instead?

Also, do you have a link for that XLR to 3.5mm cable you use? I haven't checked the description yet but thought I'd ask lll
