The closest Caeser ever came to defeat was at the battle of Munda in Spain, which was the last battle of the civil war. It was such a close run thing that the generals on both sides actually joined the fighting. As Caesar himself later said, I had fought many times for victory, but at Munda I had to fight for my life.

The notion of “Roman propaganda” is an overused trope in contemporary pop-history. It disregards the values that Roman’s held and therefore their perspective. It ignores the fact that the origin myths of the Roman’s themselves are filled with rape, fratricide and other acts they don’t shy away from. Had “propaganda” in the contemporary sense been their primary interest in recording their history, I highly doubt they would have recorded their barbaric origins or recorded their worst defeats in such detail from the sacking of the city by the celts to the defeats at the hands of Hannibal and the destruction of the Varian legions in Teutoberg Forest. It’s also oversimplification to credit Caesar’s victory over Pompey with “he was a better general” when there was pressure from the Senate to force a pitched battle with Caesar when Pompey could have simply starved he and his army out in Greece.

Cleopatras coins give the game away. She was a butter face. But she had other qualities that apparently made her irresistible to men.
