Criminals find new ways to tamper with vehicles

A metro Atlanta resident thought she got a car in great shape. That is, until she brought it home and realized there was something wrong. A mechanic found tape covering the check engine light, and an odometer that was missing 97,000 miles.

Most of these little resale used car lots get their inventory through wholesale auctions. Cars that were repossessed, impounded/abandoned, etc.

Quick tip to anyone who is looking at buying a used car, in order to not end up in this situation….When you turn the key of most cars forward (not to the crank/start position) just until everything lights up on the dash….all of the warning lights for the various systems (Engine, ABS, Airbags, Tire pressure, etc.) should light up and be visible in this position, for at least a few seconds.

If you turn the key forward and never see any type of “Check engine” or “Service engine soon” light that illuminates, then that means it’s either not working, or has been obstructed similar to this one

I always check a car out thoroughly and carry an OBDII tester as well as the knowledge on how to use it. I also carry a code book in case there are codes. I was a mechanic for 30+ years. Kinda helps. LOL Glad the seller was good enough to give her her money back. Says a lot about the car lot.

I once found a customers check engine light was rewired thru the oil pressure light. It would light up with key on and go off while running. Yet still had several codes in it. Took me awhile to find that mess.

I learned this the hard way as well.I bought a used car and it ran well for a while but it started having electrical problems and I was told the car was flood damaged and was in an accident.I WILL NEVER GO CAR SHOPPING WITHOUT A MECHANIC AGAIN!!

A pro would have instantly spotted the lack of CEL when turning the key. So, you know the dealer was in on the fraud.

EPD is going to be paying those boys a visit. As a dealer you have to have all your cars emissions inspected before sales if you are in a emissions county. Those guys are screwed and whatever inspector who did the fake testing is also screwed.

Well that's why you're supposed to turn your key on before you start it for that 5 seconds for the fuel pump to build pressure in your fuel lines but also so you can check to make sure all your lights on your dash light up

there are some shady dealerships out there.. Usually the really sketchy ones look more so like the dealership this lady bought her car from. I know of one local dealership where at least 4 people that i know bought vehicles that were mechanically done for within 2k-15k miles of purchase. Supposedly the owner of that dealership buys flood damaged cars at auction for super cheap

i mean 4, 000$ for a running driving car in this economy is a decent deal. i mean emissions suck but only thing that sucks its just dishonest a camry with that milage is still pretty damn good
