I have an 8 year old Golden who as a puppy would  drag me down the street. Then we got our Gentle Leader. What a huge difference it's made. We've used it every walk and every vet visit. It changed everything. She became a well behaved dog an we love to walk together. I would say its one of the best investments I ever made . I now also have a 4 month old Golden too, and am beginning his gentle leader walks today.

Just bought one, after trying various other collars and leads. This works fabulously on my jack russell x staffordshire bull terrier. She is pure muscle and wearing this, she immediately came to heel and walked brilliantly. I personally don't think this is cruel at all, it doesn't restrict them smelling, eating, barking, chewing, drinking, and most especially breathing!! In my opinion its much kinder than many more other leads. Thanks for the vid :D

If your dog has trouble getting used to a head halter, you might need to have a trainer familiar with them to coach you on leash handling skills. Here are some tips. Usually the problems are:

* Incorrect fit
* Using the headcollar as a threat...the "naughty dog" collar
* Trying to hold the dog in place or hold the dog back with a tight leash as you are used to with your other collars or harnesses
- The least amount of tension is needed, just as you use the reins when riding a horse
- Make the leash short enough that the dog cannot get in front of you or cross over in front of you to trip you
- It is not necessary to jerk or pull hard on this tool. Doing so will make your dog pull against it as it does on other harnesses or collars you've tried.
* Unwillingness to use food rewards to reward behavior you want
- Delicious food rewards distract the dog in the beginning, allowing taking some steps without tension on the leash
* Poor timing or placement of the rewards
- Reward the dog while there is no tension on the leash
- Reward the dog as close to your leg as possible
* Holding the food in front of the dog's nose to lure the dog with treats
- When the lure goes away the nice walking behavior goes away
* Thick, rough, clumsy leashes or snaps or flimsy hardware on the leash
- Use something soft on your hands with a sturdy snap.

IMPORTANT! Never use a retractable (Flexi) leash with a headcollar. Do not use a headcollar on a tie-out. Do not allow your dog to run to the end of the leash and torque his neck. Keep him close until he learns to walk without pulling or lunging. THEN you can give him more exploring room. Dogs with long muzzles are difficult to fit with this tool. It does ride up into the eyes. Perhaps a Halti Optifit is better. Regardless, follow the instructions and fit these tools properly.

Chris thanks for answering. In the past couple if months our walks have really changed. Macy is now walking she is a little stubborn but I have been trying to assert myself more and it is working. Tonight we walked 6 miles met a guy with 2 dogs I just crossed the street and Macy only looked. No barking no going bananas, then almost at the same time we came upon 2 more dogs who were not on leases when we first met them and I must say they were very well behaved but my Macy would have gone crazy jumping and flipping and trying to get to them but because of the gentle leader I was able to control her I have nothing but praise for the gentle leader. When we are just walking without any "friends" I feel like I am not even holding the leash. Thank you for making my life easier. Macy gets her treats, drinks water, barks. And does everything she needs to do.

Thank you so very much for making this video. It was very helpful for an easy first fitting! My dog is comfortable & happy in his new Gentle Leader. This product transformed our walking experience. I have been wanting to adopt a dog for years and my husband and I welcome our Golden Retriever, Jake into our home in January. I have always wanted a walking buddy, but Jake is big and strong and he pulls and tugs way too much. Walks were becoming more of a chore and not very fun at all... Thanks to the Gentle Leader, we are back to enjoying our walks and Jake does not tug. I am in control and we are both benefiting from that! Thank you!

It would have been really helpful to see the reaction to the Gentle Leader of dogs that actually pull on the leash, not of ones that are already trained.

The Gentle Leader works great.  It works on the same principle as a horse lead -- pulling the animal's snout in the direction s/he should go.  It's much better than choking his/her throat the way pulling on a collar can.

Picked mine up today after going through 3 chest harnesses. Went on a 3 mile walk with no pulling or tugging. I have a 17 pound Terrier mix that pulled like a 100 pound Chow. Should have bought this first. Could have saved myself $75 and a whole lotta frustration. Give it a shot...if your'e having the same issue. Petsmart (I'm sure others as well) have a great return policy. Good Luck

very thorough. I am a professional dog walker and I have always been wary of these, I thought they were a tool for "lazy" dog owners. This notion came from the way that the users presented the product to me. They talked about how the tool "calmed" their dog, not about how and why it actually worked.

This works great on my 1 year old Jack Russell. Our walks have been so much more enjoyable now. His constant pulling started to hurt my shoulder. Upon first use, the pulling stopped. Love it and definitely recommend it. The only downfall is that we get a lot of weird looks from other pet owners as they mistaken it as a muzzle.

Im so happy they went over the clamp part. I was having trouble thinking I was going to break it by pushing to hard on the plastic nub.
Im excited to start working with my dogs as I believe they will be successful

i’m so thankful for this tool! i adopted a mini eski 2 months ago and walks were so stressful. this tiny dog is STRONG and reactive and nearly choked herself with a regular collar and still wheezed with a harness. her short snout does make it even easier for the nose loop to be pawed off but we’re working on it with treats! the head collar alone attached to her main collar actually gets her to slow down and breathe-no more lunging or even barking at passerby. if you’re doubting any type of head collar, all i can say is try it before you knock it and you just may be amazed.

Literally just put this on my dog, who is a human walker, for the first time. He’s a large 6 year old non-neutered Weimaraner. He hated it at first and started rubbing his face in the carpet a bunch so I hooked up the leash and took him outside immediately. It was night and day, no pulling at all. He would stop occasionally and act like he was dying and tried to get it off with his paws but then I would quickly give him a calming hug to let him know it was okay then start the walk again. I’ve never walked my dog for more then 15 minutes. We walked for an hour and a half and I wasn’t exhausted afterwards. Just takes some patience and confidence that it will work.

Rewarding and adult dog with a new lesson learned is awesome, it is simply one of the best feelings we can have as humans, along with the lessons that we teach our offspring as in our children. Ya know the younger they begin their lessons the easier it is for them to become accustomed to your lifestyle but they can learn just as you can at any stage of their life and they need to on a daily basis to be able to survive in the world around them.

Think about it, if you spend a lifetime of teaching the dog the wrong way to do things, then the two of you will need to take you some effort to reteach them the correct way to do things, it is not that you have to unteach them which by the way you cannot do, because once something is learned you do not simply forget it, you just learn a new way and must encourage this new way to become the accepted way of doing things,

Your ability to seek out and discover new, better and fun ways to incorporate the dogs behavior to better fit your lifestyle, the sooner you begin the lessons the sooner you will feel relief and you will become a working integral part of each other and seamlessly show off you knew abilities as a dog TRAINER.

When you succeed in your first lesson, congratulations! You are on your way to becoming a great dog handler and trainer, keep watching all the great trainers on YouTube. The videos are wonderful, God knows I could have used these freaken awesome training videos when I was a kid, but now they are all online and I am loving it. Oh my personal favorite, check out, the books and free videos on YouTube from, The Monks of New Skete. The lessons they will teach you are absolutely blessed. That is how you teach any animal gently, while instilling inner peace and building trust between you and your buddy.

Once you have established TRUST, you can begin to build a knowledge base between the two of you that moves as gracefully as two hearts beating together with love and a desire to communicate together.

Learning what the animals are clueing you onto as the animal is learning what your clues or signs are asking of them, is the beginning to inner peace. Anyone who desires inner peace and is struggling with getting to a higher level of personal awareness and strength within this space, attaining peace should or could happen by trying, raising an animal while using The Monks of New Skete methodology. The complete lessons and step by step instructions with examples are all their for free, these are real Monks who raise animals. Watch from the beginning and learn who they are and why they do this, it will help with the training and it has been known to enrich your relationships with everyone you meet especially your own PRIDE. LEAARN< TEACH< ENRICH & LOVE, and LOVE COMES AROUND WHEN YOU NEED IT. IF YOU BUILD TRUE LOVE AROUND YOU TRUE LOVE WILL BE THERE WHEN YOU NEED IT.

I truly believe you will find that inner peace if you take the time and make the effort to accept the gifts that God gave you and learn to use them as a communion. That will open a new gateway here on Earth where you can live, love, and commune with all the inner peace you could desire and cherish the world around you.

I have used the gentle leader since I was a child and I am 56 years old, actually the quote gentle leader was not around back then, but I had the wonderful experience of growing up with several world champion dog show directors of the American Kennel Association that lived just across the backyard from my home. My training with them began the moment we met, my attention to animals was obvious to them and to everyone that knew me, and my love and desire to help animals and learn the safest and healthiest ways to live with them was paramount to my life and still is. What these people taught me was like a gift from God Almighty and I thank God for these endearing lessons every moment of my life.
The gentle leader started out with the worldwide knowledge of how to handle farm animals when leading them in and out of pastures and when managing the health care when the veterinarian or tribal medicine doctor made house calls, later on it was taught to and around the zoological associations worldwide, people just observed it being used by the best cattle headers from Africa for example, you simple slipped a strap around the nose of the lead animal such as a stud bull and the rest of the cattle will follow.

Archaeologists actually do not know who invented it, but it is one of the oldest and most successful ways known to mankind on how to lead any and most types of animals in difficult situations such as emergencies, like fire and flood, or when herding, particularly when predators could be in the area.

it is an irreplaceable tool, which should be used whenever you leash up, where and when your pet, animal, buddy, whatever you call them by, if they are or become distraught and unable to remember or to figure out what you are trying to communicate to them, having the gentle leader on properly instantly provided the two of you to manage the situation which a gentle touch while leading them to safety. Unfortunately as we all should know for certain, is that animals simply do not know how we want them to respond unless it is taught, practiced and practiced and practiced until it is such a part of your routine. So, if you teach them to follow your lead with the gentle leader they will follow you just about anywhere through thick and thin. Fact, Gentle Leader RULES. Peace Out.

Diesel really pulls on the leash and this has made me able to walk a 55 pound dog at age 70+ with control. He still resists me putting it on and tries to get it off but gives up eventually if he is eager to get outside.
