We all know that, apparently, clear diamonds are a girl’s best friend. The problem is, they can just be so expensive to buy! As it turns out, they aren’t the most expensive gemstones out there. Other diamonds and gemstones take that title. From a stone found in just one place on earth to one costing millions per carat, here are 15 gemstones more expensive than diamonds.

I once had a kidney stone. It cost me $5000 in medical bills. Its the most expensive stone I ever had. 😐

Diamonds aren't rare. The market is controlled to keep prices high.

Gemologist, jeweler, and sales associate here. Taaffeite is my favorite gemstone right now.. and it looks nothing like musgravite. Taaffeite ranges in different purple/pink tones and usually has little to no inclusions or internal fractures…

Most of those opals you showed were not fire opals. Fire Opals are mainly orange red or yellow. You showed a lot of different opals such as boulder opal, precious opal, crystal opal, white opal. Black opal should be on this list, because it's certainly a lot more expensive than the 'fake' Herkimer diamonds, that are really quartz crystal, not diamonds at all.

I call bs on Herkimers being more expensive than regular diamonds. In fact, they're cheap, or were, back in the late 1990's, when I bought a rough cleaned one that's slightly larger than a pea for $8. And I got it in a metaphysical store that had a wide variety of raw stones in abundance. Though the Herkimer, along with amber, were their most expensive raw mined pieces of all the semi precious, & other gemstones.

I agree. Diamonds are actually very common. Their value was a jewelry industry scam from the outset. Diamonds and engagement rings?
Biggest social ploy possibly ever!

I'm surprised that Ammolite wasn't in the top 15. It's very beautiful, and it's only been found in one place on earth, in Alberta, Canada.

My favorite gemstone that made this list is tanzanite. Whenever my budget can allow it, I invest in it. I currently have a little over 20 carats of tanzanite, no stone under .5 carats, and my collection has one 10 carat, brilliant round cut, rated by Shimansky Cape Town, New York as B-AAA+ Rare...B representing that the stone is blue dominant instead of violet dominant. I have gotten very lucky to have stumbled across the tanzanite deals i have. Love love love the stones. In my opinion it is easily in the top 5 most beautiful gemstones in the world.

Fire Opal....is not in the outrageous price range. Black Opal from "Lighting Ridge" in Australia is where the Opals that can bring five figures per carat.

Tanzanite is my favourite Gemstone, it is the center stone in the wedding ring for my wife to be as well rimmed by smaller diamonds.

The cutting makes the stones precious... I watched a professional cutting at a non precious stone and the result was unbelievable.

Would have been MUCH better if the pictures/clips shown for each one ONLY contained that type of gem. For example, during the "Fire Opal" section there were MANY other opals and other gems shown. Some were even faceted but opals can't be faceted.

... If Herkimer diamonds were so rare and expensive they wouldn't let people mine there for just $16 dollars. People did that all the time when I was growing up in NY, and people still do...

Alexandrite, Bixbite, Red Beryl, Pink Diamonds, Red Diamonds, Blue Diamonds, Black Opal, are more rare and more expensive than half of the examples stated here.

Imagine a planetary system where these cover entire landscapes. I live thinking about how the could be a planet for each gemstone, where they dominate the scenery.

I love Tanzanite. Finding good quality with lots of flashes of red +depth of color is rare and size matters. 😁

I live in Utah, USA & there is a very remote southern Utah town called Beryl, UT. This is where the gemstone "Red Beryl" is found. It is basically the same material as Emerald, except for being green, its red in color. Its very beautiful, rare & very expensive. It is plainly posted that If you are found on the property where it is located, the owners can shoot you onsite.

Fun fact about tanzanite. It is one of the only gems that has a bicolor. Which means it shins a different color under some lighting. Alexandrite is also one of those gems but it’s a tricolor instead of bicolor. Well some specimens of alexandrite are bicolor but that’s pretty rare for alexandrite.
