There has been a big surge in the number of migrants attempting to cross the US-Mexico border.
It is believed that imminent changes to US immigration law are responsible for the surge.
During the Covid-19 pandemic ‘Title 42’ was brought into effect. But that’s being replaced by the old authority: ‘Title 8’.
Title 42 allowed border authorities to quickly turn away migrants, but carried few penalties for those making illegal crossings.
Conversely Title 8 makes it harder to turn away migrants, but carries harsher penalties for those found to be in the country illegally.
It’s believed that many migrants prefer their chances under Title 42, but misinformation and chaos near the border are thought to be contributing to the crisis.
US President Joe Biden admitted that there was chaos at the border, but said that it had been that way for a number of years.
