RoboCop Reboot (2014) - Caravan of Garbage

In 2014 the most powerful people on earth (Hollywood) decided to bless us all with a reboot of the original RoboCop. Taking some cues for the 1987 classic it brought Joel Kinnaman into the title role of Alex Murphy in a effort to again revamp the classic series. With a stellar cast including Michael Keaton, Michael K Williams, Jack Earl Haley, Abbie Cornish, Sam Jackson it certainly tries some things but ultimately comes out feeling rather toothless. Looking it up on IMDB, director Jose Padilha did not have a fun time directing. He wanted to make the movie a certain way but the studio kept enforcing their demands (Padilha wanted the movie R-rated but the studio forced it to be pg-13). Because of this, Padilha was incredibly blue because he felt his vision was harvested away from him, which led to the working title being blue harvest

The “there’s nothing left” scene was without question the one scene that this whole movie should’ve been as good as. That was genuinely emotional and horrific. I FELT the empty sickness he would have felt in his phantom stomach.

The fact that the studio had 30 years of hindsight to realise a PG13 Robocop would flop fits very well into the themes of the movie if you ask me.

Man, if you were 13 and had never seen a Robocop before, this was a pretty not terrible Robocop that then made me want to watch the original movie

If you're looking for another "man struggles with being a robot" kind of movie, 2018's Upgrade is fantastic. Would 100% recommend

Original recipe 'RoboCop' was a near-perfect movie that worked on a bunch of different levels, so this remake had an uphill battle from the start. Having said that, I think all involved took a pretty good crack at it, in terms of casting, the themes it tackled and in the way it differentiated itself from the original (this time, Murphy is clearly a living person trapped inside a robot body he doesn't always have full control over, whereas in the original it was kind of hinted at that RoboCop might just be a machine that mistakenly started to think it was a man because of some leftover memories in its organic components, which were harvested from the body of a dead policeman ... hence its original working title, 'Blue Harvest'). There's a lot to like about this remake, but it was never going to live up to the original.

I feel if there wasn’t the original, if this had been the first Robocop movie ever, it would have done better. It’s not a bad movie. The cast is great. The effects are way better than what we’re getting today. There was potential here.

Pretty solid remake for most of it. Good contrast to the original is that, in this version, OCP didn't just erase Murphy's humanity straight away, but gradually made him more robotty as they "improved" their product.

Joe Kinnamon is a good actor. He proved it in Altered Carbon. He's a badass in that show. Season 1 is peak hardcore sci-fi

I'm only realizing now how funny it is that that huge car explosion somehow spared Murphy's face entirely, because based on his orientation to the car you'd think that would have been the first thing to go

The concept artists working on the film were told to make a much bleaker, darker look for the eponoymous Robot Cop - this meant losing a lot of the azure hue of the original suit. Hence, the concept team's working title for this task was "Blue Harvest."

Not going to lie, I have a soft spot for this one. Completely different vibe from the original -- that scene where they show him what's left of his body was actually amazing.

In the original robocop you only hear the robocop theme twice! And both times its completely earned and comes in with thunderous excitement
