Why is Independence Day Celebrated on July 4 instead of July 2?

“The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival" said the future second President of the United States John Adams on July 2, 1776. Wait, July 2nd? That doesn't sound right! Kris White explains why we celebrate Independence Day on July 4th instead.

The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

To be fair, 4th of July sounds better than 2nd of July 😬

The vote was taken on the 2nd, to be sure; formal ratification by the Continental Congress was then necessary to make it official, and that was done on the 4th. Therefore, while the 2nd was certainly significant, it wasn't final---the 4th IS the correct celebratory day, and those who argue that it ought to be on the 2nd are splitting hairs.

He never mentions that a vote was taken on July 2, 1776 and the representatives of the colonies demanded a unanimous split from the Mother Country before they would edit the Declaration on the 3rd and, ultimately, adopt on the 4th. True Independence was voted for unanimously on July 2!

My favorite vacation was to walk the Philadelphia freedom trail with my family. I got a little teary-eyed when we entered Independence Hall.

July 4th, everyone becomes an American slave instead of a British slave.
