Big Thank You to Rowland at First Class Watches on 01926 298499
This piece is a re-interpretation of Japan’s – and Seiko’s – first ever Diver’s watch, released in 1965. This design is a special edition commemorating 100 years of Seiko featuring on a watch dial – the brand name now synonymous with watchmaking innovation.
The original automatic 1965 Diver’s watch marked the beginning of Seiko’s watchmaking pursuit for diving reliability, safety, and professional specifications. From 1966-1969, this watch was worn by members of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition on trips to the South Pole, proving its durability in challenging environments.
For this latest redux, the design is updated with a more sophisticated specification, heightened water resistance, and improved power reserve. Built in a 40mm stainless steel case, the sapphire crystal glass is surrounded by a deep ‘tide’ grey bezel and matching dial, closely resembling the 1965 original. Gold coloured accents further enhance its vintage style. In line with professional ISO Diving specification, the hands and indices are coated in glow-in-the-dark Lumibrite whilst its upright date calendar in a 4.5 o’clock position also add to its legibility. For extra comfort and wearability, the bracelet has updated short pitch links and a shorter buckle. It is also slimmer than previous models, with a 13mm depth.
The in-house built 6R55 automatic movement is accurate to -15/+25 seconds per day with a 72-hour power reserve and 300m water resistance.
This special edition piece is accompanied by an eco-friendly fabric strap, made of 100% recycled plastic bottles.
Prospex is a combination of the words ‘Professional’ and ‘Specifications.’ Seiko Prospex timepieces are designed to be practical, reliable and durable; to meet the high standards required in extreme environments for sports lovers and adventure seekers alike.

I recently got the black dial version, SPB453. Simple, handsome design, very comfortable to wear, and quite accurate at -3.5 seconds per day. I love it.

Hi Barry, this certainly looks the part, and Seiko really understand case design. LG Bob 🍻

I've had the SPB147 for a few years now, and wear it on the OEM Seiko bracelet. I absolutely love it! Lately I've been contemplating upgrading to this SPB455, but I'm skeptical I can love another watch more than the 147.

The new marinemaster dropped to 200m and the new 6Rmas increased to 300m. Seiko, please explain what's going on.😢

I looked at this today and it could be my daily just to give my sla017 a rest .
It is a nice size, feels comfortable on my wrist and could be my first seiko with the 6r movement.
My only gripe would be that at this price point i would have liked the crown to be signed.
Thank you for sharing this video. Liked and subscribed.

The more I looked at it the more I liked it. I could live with that one very easily. I think the NATO strap suited it well and would be my choice. I even like the small date window, I think that's the way date windows should be integrated on a dial. Great watch and super review.

What a tidy little thing! V nice. Not sure if the 6R55 is such a big improvement as you say but the case shape seems to hug the wrist beautifully. I’m guessing it’s a comfortable watch!

I recently tried on the 451 blue dial/bezel variant and I’m sold . Definitely a beautiful, solid yet perfect size and what seems like a comfortable wearing watch . My only concern would be the clasp with only two micro adjustments??? That seems a little odd for a Seiko diver watch.

Another great review. I do like the heritage look. Looks better on the NATO to my eye.

It would be interesting to see if there are any other substantial updates from the old 6R35 movement aside from a couple of hours on the power reserve. It seems like the SPB143 would have been a home run had it not been for the widespread reports of poor accuracy, wild positional variance, etc, in the 6R35.

(I know referring to it as a potential "home run" is a very American cultural reference... curious what the English equivalent would be!)

It's comforting to see the one you had regulated pretty well. That's a sign that things could be improving for the better.

I wish Seiko would commit to a tighter variance because there is so much fear/uncertainty/doubt circulating where it feels like a lottery where you could win- or lose- big.

One of the speculative narratives circulating is that Seiko was aware of some QC flaw at scale in the 6R35 movement and this new movement is their way of quietly addressing it and phasing out the old 6R35. It would be interesting if someone with a watchmaking background had a chance to investigate. It would go a long way in reestablishing confidence in the brand.

I am thinking of buying sla055 ( a shop where I live has one and they are willing to negotiate on the price - it’s now £2500-3000) but I do agree this looks very good. I think the problem is going to be the same problem We all know. I have an alpinist with the 6R35
we all know the issues. it’s a shame because I love the watches and I’m convinced they could regulate the movements to a really good standard.

I would like to say this is a very good looking Seiko watch. The price is a little bit high. But this is a very good Tudor BB58 alternative if your budget is only USD 1000+.
