PROPAGANDA Album Review A SECRET WISH

Electronic Cafe look at the ground-breaking A SECRET WISH album by Propaganda (Ralf Dorper, Michael Mertens, Claudia Brücken, Susanne Freytag / ZTT & Trevor Horn

PROPAGANDA is a German synth-pop band formed in Düsseldorf in 1982. They signed a recording contract with ZTT Records as early as 1983 and released their first single "Dr Mabuse" in 1984. Followed by their debut studio album, the critically acclaimed A Secret Wish, in 1985. Two of the album's singles, "Dr. Mabuse" and "Duel", were UK Top 30 hits. A second studio album, 1234 (1990), was recorded with a markedly different line-up and released by Virgin Records to less success. There have been several partial reformations of the group in the 21st century, with the original vocalists currently active as xPropaganda, and the remaining members releasing an album in 2024 with a guest vocalist Thunder Bae.

Hi, gentlemen... another great episode! Uncanny how you seem to cover the bands that are coming to my attention—Propaganda and Onetwo have been popping up frequently, so your primer on their work was helpful! Also... so glad you have enjoyed The Ascension... loved what you had to say about it, Andy! And thank you for the shoutout. Keep up the good work! I’ll be here. - Tami

Great guys! I totally loved this. Have been waiting since you first announced and then I forgot, so this was a nice, snowy surprise for me today. Mark, I like how you cited noticing differences between what is on vinyl and CD. I only have downloaded, digital for the 4 Propaganda albums that I own, but I will have to check this out. Andy, thanks for marrying the notion of greed and how it very much got in the way of Propaganda going further as well as how much of the commentary that Rusty Egan has had about the business. And look now these days in Gary Numan's comments about streaming over a million times and getting a mere 37 quid for it. I was reflecting yesterday and I wondered to myself if there soon will be any art/music left someday. I hope so! Thanks as always guys! Very uplifting.

I really love the two primary albums. There is a big difference between the two, but now I know why. Great episode and review!!

Love both Propaganda studio albums, disagree with your opinion about the gulf between them. Love the channel Guys, thanks for all you do for us.

Great vid again guys, Propaganda were like so many bands of the time they were so nearly there but needed directing in the right direction. Bands like this required strong management as musicians are not business people and have no concept of what they are signing up for and that causes tensions between the bandmates and leads to them finishing.

A secret wish is a wonderful album. Jewel came out when I was thirteen and it completely blew my mind. I took the bus to the Woolworths in Brixton south London to buy the album on vinyl. It was in those days when you could get a vinyl record for £4.99. Watch out for the Orchestral Manoevers in the Dark LP English Electric. It features Claudia Bruken as the voice of the machine. Her voice manages to sound robotic and very sexy at the same time.

A Secret Wish- an outstanding record. Back when records could sound like they cost a fortune to make and this one still does. See also Cupid and Psyche and Hounds Of Love, from the same year that could be described the same way.

On 1993 i found album 1234 of Propaganda at someones house. I fall in love at first sight. Many years after, I found that this was a second album. I start serching for first. When i Found Secret Wish, I fall in love a second time.

Another great review and such a pity the original line up were unable to work together again. What might have been!
A Secret Wish was a great album and still sounds good today. 1234 wasn't a bad album but in my view didn't have the innovative sound of the original line up. Thanks for posting and I look forward to the next one.👍🏼

So interesting as all I know about this band is my OH introduced me to this album and it became our 'courting' music, still love it, still together. Only found out recently that David and Steve were involved. Got it, obviously, on CD think originally we heard it on cassette...maybe recorded by a mate?
