The Garden Party

This award-winning adaptation of the short story by Katherine Mansfield and PBS special was produced by Paul R. Gurian and written and directed by Jack Sholder in 1973. It stars Beatrice Straight, Maia Danziger & Jessica Harper.
Please note that while the American filmmakers wished to honor the intentions of this classic literary work, the time and location were moved from England after WW I to New England after WW II.

A very fine adaptation of the Katherine Mansfield story...key word there, adaptation .... it wasn't created, 50 years ago, so that students can pass an exam on a short story. Go read the Mansfield story. Don't worry, it's short. in this film, you will have to figure out what the writer and cinematographer, the actors, the costumers are trying to tell you about class snobbishness...the end of a cataclysmic world war. It is subtle.

The thing is the location was Wellington, New Zealand - Katherine Mansfield's birthplace; very lovely film but changed from the original also by the addition of nuances that Mansfield never vocalized and took away from the integrity.

what is the answer to situations like these? Somebody is up, somebody is down. Happiness and pleasure in one place, and then misery and tragedy in the other. Why? How? And how do you establish a meeting place between the two? You can't, obviously. But what do you do for the one that's down when you are the one who is up? No easy answer. Maybe no answer.

Wow, this adaptation is significantly different from the original short story. A lot of the themes and ideas are either barely explored or are non-existent. “Little things” such as the linguistics of the Sheridans in contrast to the working class’ are actually significant- yet is completely cut out. And obviously many more such as... where’s Jose?! Perhaps the director or even scholars at the time didn’t recognize the significance of the things they left out, but what’s left is terribly uninteresting.

For anyone who chooses to watch this adaptation in place of the short story (especially for academic reasons), I highly recommend you familiarize yourself with the original work. Much of the discussions regarding the story’s themes are prevalent with the written work. You’ll notice distinct differences between the social class’ dialect, the significance of Laura’s acquired hat, Laura aestheticizing reality, and whatever else you’ll hopefully discover for yourself.

Despite my opinion on this adaptation, I’m really glad I was able to watch it. Thank you for those who restored this!
