There's also the concept of deliberate practice. That is doing something over and over may not get you there, but practicing hard in a specific problem area might get you 80% of the way.

This is excellent, Grant! I got one of those Degree thingies. Been learning what needs to be learned for the making of graphic novels for a few thousand hours now, 3D being a part of this ambition. Just a few thousand more and I’ll have nailed it — that’s quite gratifying 🙂🇬🇧

I like to know the basics (and a bit more) when learning skills. It maybe the jack of all trades but it certainly links to the Steve Jobs quote - " The musicians play their instruments. I play the orchestra."

Yeah the interview with Alex Alvarez is really excellent. Highly recommend.

Thanks for sharing this motivation. Now I'm gonna practice every single day.

I've been using blender almost non stop for like 3 years now and I feel very confident in my skill at using it but then again I've never done commissions or worked in the industry so if I were to somehow get a job in the 3d industry I'd have no idea what to do probably

10 years ordinarily allows you get exposed to all sorts of things, and yes, I guess you could call the artist "seasoned".
But I think progress could be creatively accelerated. I've been some 8yrs now into 3d, of which Blender has 10 months now, but I've forced myself to attempt challenging stuff like you see in Hollywood blockbusters, in Blender and it's helping my growth.

Making your own short films or animations makes it fun while you learn. Takes the "work" out of it.

I would add that you should define your goals and optimize your learning for that.
Each field has its own peculirities that heavily impact the skill in question. To draw an Iron Man comics is not the same as drawing a "Mona Lisa". These 2 indeed have a lot of overlap. You have to understand anatomy, shading, materials, reflection... But it is the differences that count. You have to draw a comic book relatively fast, you have to account for smaller size of a typical comic book panel, you have to account for clear readability etc. And if you focus on what is important for you at the moment and discard anything else, you will be able to save yourself a couple of thousands of hours. Look at comic book artists of the Silver Age. Their style isn't very complicated. In fact, a couple of hundred of hours will allow you to draw like Steve Ditko or Jack Kirby. But their understanding of the medium is superb. Reading their work is easy on the eyes, clear, they don't waste space. Compare it to somebody like Alex Ross. His drawings are beautiful and take a lot of skill. Probably even 10000 hours is not enough to draw like Alex Ross. But as a comic book artist he is awful. His drawings are very static, action is hard to follow, each panel is cluttered with detail. He isn't a bad artist, but his style is not suited to comic books

This is interesting. I never thought art was something I wanted to do, and I was depressed and had suicidal thoughts since I was a child until I tried out Blender 1 year ago. It changed my life completely, and the most important is, I thought I was doing something incredible so my depression slowly faded away as I got better at CGI. The thing is, I'm just stuck, after 1 year, I cant even model a complex thing. I'm trying to model a gun from Destiny called "Sleeper Simulant" and its killing me, its going nowhere. Sometimes I get the shape correct, but cant add the loops because topology is all messed up. I'm always wondering why I'm trying to do this or am I suitable for this. It's obvious that I'm not really suited for it, and I hate the process so much, but the end results always make me happy. Hell I dont even know where I'm going with Blender. I started doing this stuff because of characters, but sculpting is the thing I hate the most in CGI. Either way, I dont have anything I'm looking forward to use other than Substance Designer and Blender.

Thanks for this so inspiring video. I'm 27 now, with a master's degree in engineering and working on the industry. A few months ago, I discovered Blender and CGI. Now, I think I took the wrong decision in studying engineering. I'm considering becoming a 3D artist but I don't know if it is too late and it isn't the easiest decision. At least, since I'm good with CAD tools. I think that I have some hours in my pocket.

I believe the 10000 hours thing suffers from "survivor bias", in that the researchers saw that master practitioners had done 10000 hours practice, but they didn't look at the ones that had done 10000 hours and screwed up.

That said, I'm no expert just read this some where. I'm pretty sure 10k hours practice gonna help.

I guess we should do the hours with the mentality of always improving and always learning. Unlike driving cars, we don't care for any improvement at a certain point, like after we got the license or something.

His idea is not really universal. Research was done on violinist. It can be more or less nearer to that number however if memory techniques are used to remember and active recall technique given & introduced by faymen & also our work is organised by mind maps then our mastery can be achieved earlier as we are actively involved in the learning process.

I'm dedicating 10+ hours a day to blender currently, and while I"m not an elite expert, I feel like a journeyman at only 2-3 months.
