What are “zombie” cells? As Halloween approaches, discover the spooky-sounding biological topic that is actively being investigated to spur advances in medicine and the neurosciences. Zombie cells, also known as senescent cells, are cells that continue living after their DNA has been severely damaged. They are called “zombie”cells, because they are damaged yet do not die off as expected.

Normally, cells go through an aging process of their own called "cellular senescence." This sparks an immune response to remove them. As we age, our immune systems are not able to eliminate damaged cells as effectively. This causes a buildup of zombie cells and leads to inflammation, which can alter metabolism and stem cell function, promote aging, and contribute to conditions like Alzheimer’s. Scientists are now researching how to eliminate zombie cells from the body to protect it from diseases like dementia, certain cancers, and cardiovascular disease. Santosh Kesari, MD, PhD, Director of Neuro-oncology at Pacific Neuroscience Institute explained. “If we understand why senescent cells happen and how to reverse them, we have the ability to have healthier aging with less debility."
