***LYRICS***

[VERSE 1]

Me and all my friends down by the river, fourteen running through the streets
Living on a prayer in a teenage wasteland, trying not to bust at the seams

We were young, so low tryn’a get high
Praying up above that our dreams never die
Putting that Jeep into four-wheel drive
Shining like stars in the sky

We grew up in this town
We screwed up in this town
Had each other’s backs when we got off track
Man life moves fast

[CHORUS]

In this town baby I can never get away
I don’t wanna leave but you know I can’t stay
There’s something ‘bout these hills and those country roads
That makes me feel at home in this town

We laughed, we cried, we stayed out all night
We did everything wrong, but we turned out alright
Baby it’s bittersweet
You can take me out of this town
But you can’t take this Town out of me

[VRS 2]

Well some of us move on, some get locked up
And some don’t make it out
I think about those days when we’d just meet up at Adam’s house and just ride around

We were so young, so lost, tryna get by
Couldn’t tell us nothing we had too much pride
Spending our weekends working part time
We were just tryna survive

Cuz we were raised in this town
Learned how to pray in this town
Seen my friends die, seen mommas cry, still asking why

[BRIDGE]

Cuz we grew up in this town
We screwed up in this town
I’ll remember us the way it was
It’s always love

I am 66 years old and have lived in West Virginia all my life, born in McDowell county. This is a great song, it says so much about what it means to be a mountaineer. Thank you, keep it up.

The more I listen the more overcome with emotion I get. My heart runs the gamut from joy to pain from pride to grief. When one song makes you feel all of that it’s art. Thank you 🙏🏼 so many memories of good times past and some grief come back with each lyric. This town is everyone’s town. 🖤

Every once in a while a song, a singer, a video will bring tears to my eyes. I don’t know why, really. The melody, the passion or emotion, the images...I don’t know why David’s song and video speak to my heart. I think because it’s so damn real and from the heart. It’s a deep song with deep simple images that remind me, teach me about the sad beauty of our human hearts.
David has written beautiful prose, simple declarative sentences that play across the bottom of the video. I was so taken by the music and the images David’s prose had to wait for the next viewing. David is a writer as well as a singer and songwriter.
The images. The townsfolk posed unmoving before the camera, unselfconscious, unaffected, just being there. I felt them in a way that, again, defies explanation, but I am reminded of a simple phrase of William Faulkner’s: “They endure.”
I think the video work and the song are of a inseparable piece...brilliant yet unassuming...unassuming like those folks in that West Virginia town.
