As if anyone ever enjoyed going to the dentist, no matter where in the world they are.... But I have to say, this wasn't what I was expecting.

3:45 Australian dentist - you can't see any tools - fee: $400 (not covered by medicare)
4:15 German dentist - all tools laid out for efficiency - fee: covered by National Health Insurance (Krankenversicherung) for basic dental treatment
What do you prefer?

Hey Jacob, one of the reasons I’m moving back to Germany is because the healthcare system is way better than in the United States here even with insurance it’s very costly, I paid out $2000 last year for my dentist out of pocket

morgen sitzt er da wieder im Wartezimmer und spielt mit der Kugelbahn... :-P

Thats a form of German efficiency - the needed basic tools are prepared so the action can start immediately. By some dentists the are covered under a cloth, by others not.

My Dentist is right across the street. I had an appointment for 9am. Went out of my flat at 8:50. Arrived at 8:51. Waited until 8:52. Check-up done at 8:53. Removed tartar at 8:55, home at 8:57. oops. still have 3 minutes left until I have my appointment :D
I think he must hate me just a little bit. Only had 2 procedures in the last 15 years when a filling went bad and had to be replaced. He always asks if I want anestesia or go without.

In Germany Health is the most important Thing. It's like drinking water here. You can not charge to much from People for the essencial stuff. ;)

Sobald du im Sozialstaat ein Einkommen beziehst, wird dir automatisch auch die Krankenversicherung vom Gehalt abgezogen. Daher kostenlose Behandlung.

Coloured Dentist- Cutlery. That's pretty cool. Takes away the fear and the pain. My dentist even takes care of the typical smell. It doesn't smell "dentistly"/ "dentisticly" (I don't know) You surely know, what I mean. Also my dentist asks me about my mood and the music, I would like to listen to.
To make a long story short...-When I am finally sitting in the leather chair, I look up to the LED room ceiling, watching the rainforest and I'm listening to my favourite music.

And your insurance covers a checkup at the dentist twice a year, at one of them you get your teeth cleaned. No afditional costs. Health care is great in germany.

dentist pricing is pretty much a case by case experience. basic treatment is completely free, but basic is not always what you want. sometimes basic treatment can mean to remove the tooth without replacement or if it isnt a front tooth you may end up with some metallic filling that looks terrible.
often the dentist will offer you some alternatives to save the tooth or use plastic / ceramic fillings that fit your tooth colour but those can quickly get expensive (removing the tooth nerve, rebuild a part of the tooth and then make it look as nothing ever happend can quickly go in to hundreds of €. or he may even suggest implants wich can cost multiple thousend €

rule of thumb is if it is required to continue to live with full functionallity it is covered 100% as soon as it involves aesthetics you are the one who has to pay. for most parts of healthcare that is no problem but for dentists this line is very blurry and some dentists will be more aggressive in selling than others.

It has to be said that there are still costs when you are treated by a dentist or doctor. But you get no bill. You pay your insurance and the insurance and the doctor clear the costs. You don't notice anything of that.

So glad for you, Jacob. I fortunately got similar positive experiences at my personal dentist. And I’m the guy who’s shitting his pants in such a chair usually for whatever reason. 😅
Great you had an okay experience 😊

Hey :) Great video! Found your channel because I wanted to see if there's videos about visiting German dentists already since I'm releasing a vocabulary lesson on the topic this Saturday, haha. I actually lived in Australia for almost a year in 2012 so this is a nice surprise. Maybe we can film something together one day! Cheers, Dominik

The word "kostenlos" (means free) is not the right description of how our helthcare system works. Of course material and the staff at the dentist have to be paid. It is done by paying your "Sozialabgaben", which is a part of your salary that goes directly to the "Krankenkasse" (Insurance Company).

lucky u had a dentist who's intersted in her job and most importantly in her patients, not all in germany r like that ...around my city i checked so many dentists and they were mostly not willing to do a good job or not motivated/open to more than one and the same approach on treating which they indifferently apply to _every_ issue even if other methods r more common for certain issues ...really frustrating, but thats the lot if u r just "gesetzlich versichert", they only crave for "Privatpatienten"
