6 Multi billion failed or abandoned projects in Africa - Mega projects are mind-bogglingly complex multi-billion investment undertakings that require meticulous organization, not to mention a fair amount of luck, to get everything right. Needless to say, even the best-laid plans can go awry. Failed mega projects aren't a new phenomenon, with many projects across the world failing before even the project taking off. Like elsewhere in the world, infrastructure projects investment in africa are often late and over budget. According to various project investment analysis reports, failure rates of projects in Africa seem to be in excess of 50%. This analysis is quite surprising, since the World Bank reports that $93 billion a year is needed for infrastructure investment in Africa , two-thirds for investment in new physical infrastructure and a third for operations and maintenance of existing assets.
Despite the fact that several international organizations such as the World Bank, the United Nations, among others, have implemented several multi-billion projects across Africa, many of these mega projects did not see the light of day. Many mega projects were not just incompatible with the societies or countries being implemented in, but most of them failed disastrously. Projects in Africa fail not only because of mismanagement, but also because of the sheer complexity of these specific project settings. Specifically, projects fail because of lack of competency or knowledge in project management and also because of corruption, poor policy planning and implementation and their complex contexts.
Our video today will present some of the most expensive mega projects which were never constructed or failed in Africa.
