It’s still dead even after changing the jumpers on the drive itself, the drive never comes ready despite sounding normal.

The seek sounds fine to me as well. It is highly likely the main interface chip for the SCSI side just from natural causes such as age and heat, or from ESD damage to the PCB at some point. That is a shame, as I have had SCSI drives to the same thing to me as well, it really sucks, also I have seen multiple Barracuda's of that type have their interface chips go bad, so there is definitely something up such as a bad batch of chips on some, or just age or ESD is killing be pretty hard to pinpoint what happened unless you knew the whole history of the drive and all, that really is a bummer : ((
