Right there with you! There's some fetishism/snobbery about woodworking workbenches, but practically speaking, softwood makes sense.

One thing no one mentions, other than PF and JA, is that softwood workbenches grip your work better than hardwood benches!

When I learned woodworking in a shop, that is exactly what I was taught. The bench wood should be softer than the work piece wood for that very reason. And not just if something falls. If you accidentally put a project down with a wood chip or something else between it and the bench, hopefully it's the bench that gets the dent. Softwoods rule for benches.

Dents build character. They tell a story

Doesn't really matter what your workbench is made out of, as long as it's solid and stable. I have a bunch of different interchangeable tops for my workbench that are just mdf cover plates with carpet laminate and different surfaces on it for different purposes. The carpet is for the delicate projects (with metals that can't be scratched for example) and the laminate is for glueing because the glue doesn't stick to it. Workbenches are very personal, but dont have to be expensive.

Great tip. Softwoods are less pricey more available and easier to work with/on

Even better if it has an easily replaceable top so when it gets all beat up you can just replace the top and not the whole bench! I love my softwood bench

You are so right! I have (built it myself) a 5-1/2" thick, super solid workbench made from pine. It is awesome!

I totally agree. My own home bench is spruce and pine. Nor have I ever worked at a hardwood bench in over 40 years as a professional.

The lord gives his softest pine to his hardest workers 🙏

that one workbench book from lost art press (free pdf) talked about softwood benches and how softwoods end up being hardwoods after time, I'll find out in a few years myself

I'd build the top out of pine and the legs/supports out of white oak.

Its also a benefit to your style of workbech, if it gets damaged and you want to replace a board, then its much easier

Sound reasoning, I also chose softwood construction Fir for my workbench, and with danish oil then Odie’s dark it turns to a nice amber/reddish color like it could almost be cedar. Sealed it all with some satin poly it does the job 👍

...you can plane down the softwood a bit if it gets too far out of whack.

If it's functional it's good.

Sometimes I'll take a (1/16) vaneer or something to put on top and counter sink screws in them so it's a replaceable top when it gets to damaged, from me doing stupid shit. Like setting the depth of a circular saw just a bit too deep.

I never even thought about the piece not being dented! That makes so much sense

Thanks pal, been toiling over a bench build myself for years and am scouring my local area for timber that is affordable, and came across some air dried oak that was reasonable, and considering it. My skills are evolving, so I wasn’t super confident i’d be able to handle large pieces of oak for the bench design i’m leaning towards (Paul Sellers English joiners) with my hand tools. Thanks for this 🤜🏻⚡️🤛🏻

Agreed! Topping with pine 2x4 end grain is blammo; perfect.
