I don't know why so many people disliked this video. I was wondering what boogaloo was so I Googled that, then found bugalú as one of the search results. I think it's super important to understand how the history of the culture from which a dance originates translates into how we move when we express ourselves through motion & rhythm. How can we really express what we're feeling without understanding some of the context? It's also really awesome to know where to look for similar styles for inspiration.

Thank you for this tutorial!

This lady is amazing. She really know her trade. Most pro dancers 💃🏻 dont know about the historical and cultural context of the music and the dance related to it

My beautiful Aunts loved this dance. As they were younger than my Mom, who married young, they were able to go to all of those marvelous 1950's and 1960's dance halls and they knew all the popular dances here in USA back then. I'm glad they had so much fun as young ladies and got to enjoy their youth.

gracias por su explanacion Nena. i didnt know that before. Interesting! I have seen Roy Barrato live in London. Mongo Santamaria another amazing giant. i am unclear as to why anybody may dislike your instruction and presentation. it was educational. what an amazing time to be alive in New York in the 50s and 60s. i have seen a documentary on the exploision of latin american music at the time in New york and interviews with the dancers at thetime. not sure when it was filmed maybe the 70s and80s. it was a fantastic video. what an enormous contribution latin american culture has made on the world. Mucho gusto from an honorary latina who is actually a gringa!!

Keep in mind Puerto Ricans invented this by fusing Blues, soul, , and salsa with a twist of mambo and cha-cha and called it bugalu' in NYC. It is a latin version of the boogaloo. There is also an electric boogaloo which is a mix of popping and breaking. My mom and aunts taught me this dance. This was there era in NYC. Hiphop was also invented by Blacks and Puerto Ricans but Puerto Ricans don't get enough recognition in that part. Yes Puerto Ricans are mixed blooded with Blacks and Taino...shit the world is mixed and we all take from eachother and blend it to make up styles. Bachata was born from the Puerto Rican bolero, which was birthed from Cuba. See...there mixed in everything.

The “Bugaloo” looks to me be a cross of The Jitterbug, The Hustle, and The Twist.

What is it with Latin Dance videos? 90% talking, maybe 5% dancing. Also, Why isn't there a "boogaloo with a partner?" It always looks like two people dancing in tandem vs. dancing together.

Boogaloo was developed in NYC by Latinos looking for an alternative to their parents music. Joe Cuba, Johnny Colon, Pete Rodriguez, Joe Bataan, early Lebron Brothers were some of the originators. Look for artists from Cotique label records. Boogaloo was also a dance, our dance. This lady is NOT showing that. And she doesn’t know what she is talking about. This is not our culture. That why there are so many negative reviews.

If only YouTube had existed in 1970. Then that singer from The Pipkins wouldn't have been so sad and blue.

Boogaloo was the Nuyorican soulful response to R&B, period.
