Crumlin Road Gaol is a former prison situated in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The jail itself was designed by Sir Charles Lanyon, and was built between 1843 and 1845, it is the only Victorian era prison remaining in Northern Ireland and was one of the most advanced prisons of its day.

On March 31, 1996 the Crumlin Road jail offically closed. The closure ended a 150-year history of imprisonment, Belfast conflict, and executions.

Built within a five-sided walled site, the gaol had four wings fanning from a central area known as The Circle. The Grade A listed building is part of the social fabric of the city and the first inmates, who were forced to walk from Carrickfergus Prison in chains, arrived in 1846.

People always love things that are mysterious and since visiting this jail is all considered a different experience, one of the things that make it even a lot more exciting is the tunnel that links the courthouse on the other side of the Crumlin road to the hanging cell, Governor's office, hospital and graveyard.

The Crumlin Road Gaol is open seven days of the whole year except Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day. The ticket fee for entering the Crumlin prison differ according to the age; adults will pay 9 pounds, children from 5 to 15 years old will pay 6.50 pounds and those under 5 years old will be allowed access for free, and there are those who could bring ticket for the whole family for 25 pounds.

I think the tour shud consist of being shown the lower wing when they were hanged and taken away, and also the upper wings which are out of bounds.

If you are looking for things to do in Belfast or are thinking of a Belfast vacation then a visit to the Crumlin Road Jail or the Crumlin Road Gaol needs to be added to the list.
