Actually that episode still confuses me to this day like what if Rick's universe is also just a miniverse and unlike the other scientists Rick only ever kept the box for himself
So all the other methods which produce energy (which in reality aren't ever 100% effective at transfer of energy) are being used and the "inefficient" energy actually just goes to outside their universe

Rick could have given them solar panels. Hell, he could have made a robot that installed solar panels on every square inch of a barren planet, or made a dyson sphere, so it's kinda weird he's relying on mechanical power to run his car.
