Belize is protected by our Barrier Reef, the longest in this hemisphere, which greatly mitigates the mainland storm surge . The problems here are rain and subsequent flooding from our rivers flowing west to east to the Caribbean Sea, compounded by the fact that coastal Belize is below sea level. High tide makes the flood waters have nowhere to go. High wind speeds are deadly for poor dwellings, often unable to withstand even the slightest strong breeze. It is imperative that the storm fast-tracks across the narrow width of the country and the hundreds of inhabited coral islands (cayes), lessening the immediate active impact. The aftermath? Therein lies the biggest problem... 😕
