I wonder how much GM has used the shutting down of Cruise to hide other loses. A few decades ago I was hired to run sales for two divisions of a large multinational that had been losing money for years. By working directly with the field sale people we were able to close the first year with both divisions profitable. I received a very handsome bonus (which I suspect the board never expected to have to pay) and was fired. I concluded that these two divisions had been used as 'tax loss' divisions for years. Places where the parent corporation had dumped losing money projects. I was surprised to realize that very large companies often do this quite often.

It wasn't the incident that got GM suspended. It was the fact that GM lied about the incident and deliberately witheld information about it from authorities who subsequently found out.
