Fun fact, NATO said at the beginning that the USSR was NOT thr enemy or the reason for their creation, to test this, the USSR asked if it could join too and NATO said no, so that's how the cold war kicked off
And then after, Russia also applied to join Nato seeing as the USSR was no more and Russia tried to form closer ties to the west... Safe to say when they were rejected it made them very paranoid again, because why wouldn't they allow them to join, so that's why Russia gets pretty angry everytime a former USSR country tries to join and NATO actually agrees to try and do it, plus the fact that Nato promised that when the USSR gives independence to its states, they wouldn't expand eastwards, and here we are today, with 1 nation on the border of Russia, 1 being accepted in candidacy and another at war with Russia because one of many reasons being joining Nato(but not the main reason) and another country basically destroyed in 08 just for trying to join Nato

The USSR asked to join NATO because they wanted to try and prove it was Anti-Communist so they could strengthen their hold on the Eastern Bloc.

Fun fact: in 1955, the Soviets actually applied to join NATO, it was rejected (of course) because they thought the USSR would destabilize the alliance.
