RANKING EVERY DOMINION EXPANSION (2023 Edition w/ Plunder) Undiscovered Games Ep15 Board Game Review

*CLARIFICATIONS & CORRECTIONS:*
*1.* My video contains first editions only. Please note there are currently 6 second edition boxes with changes to some cards. _My rankings are based entirely on the original first editions because that's what I'm familiar with._ However, all editions are interchangeable with each other! If you want all the cards from both editions, you can buy the first editions & then get the little update packs. See the link below for more info on 1st vs 2nd editions.

*2.* There are 7 Heirloom cards in Nocturne, not 6. I forgot to include the Magic Lamp/Secret Cave in this video. Still, I would've liked to see more of those because it's a neat idea!

*3.* Regarding "coffers" in Renaissance vs. "coin tokens" in Guilds: In the video, I implied there was a difference between these. I mistakenly said Guilds was the only expansion that lets you spend coins like money, but coffers in Renaissance work the same way. It just calls them coffers, but you _can_ spend them right away in conjunction with your treasure cards. For some reason, I was thinking you had to wait till your next turn, but you can use them in your buy phase on the same turn you receive them.
After making this video, I learned that later printings of Guilds actually included a coffers mat and changed the wording from "take a coin token" to "+1 coffers." That makes it _much_ less confusing! Just know Guilds and Renaissance use coins/coffers the same way, but this does not change my ranking. Renaissance cards are more generous with coffers than Guilds cards. Plus Renaissance has the Villagers mat to store up coins for extra actions. So Renaissance is definitely more prone to those swingy games like I talked about in the video, whereas Guilds is a bit tamer. If you play Renaissance, I highly recommend using the Colony & Platinum cards from Prosperity; otherwise your game might end prematurely from players stocking up on too many coffers/villagers (just my personal experience).

👉July 2024 Update: Rio Grande recently released a 2nd Edition of Cornucopia/Guilds in a combined set with some new cards! The combined box would rank _much_ higher on my list. I never got the combined set 1st Edition, but apparently that edition fixed the confusion of "coffers" vs. "coin tokens" in Guilds. Now everything is called "coffers, " which makes it _much_ less confusing! I am so happy I got the 2nd edition Guilds/Cornucopia box! (See my clarifications in the video description for more info.)

Anyway, I think the new 2nd Edition Cornucopia/Guilds would probably be somewhere in my top 10...not sure where yet, as it's still pretty new to us. After a few plays, we've noticed it has worked really well with Renaissance & Prosperity. Just something to consider!

I will try to update this comment periodically, and I might even make a new ranking video after the new expansion comes out later this year. It's not a perfect science to rank all these sets, and I understand everyone has lots of differing opinions on this. That's great! Just remember this is all based on my own personal experience. I am not a Dominion expert!

"My favorite card from each box as well as my wifes favorite card from each box" so wholesome

This is an impressive summary of every Dominion box! Dope video! I like Dominion but haven't really considered expanding... I am starting to see why there are so many expansions now.

Loving your channel! This might be my favorite video yet. You provide such a clear and concise overview of every expansion. It’s obvious that you are very experienced with Dominion, and that you genuinely like playing it. Great job!

I remember seaside and prosperity being my favorite Dominion expansion over a decade ago, when I first played the game. I fell behind the newer expansions (I think the last one I tried was Dark Ages), but it is interesting to see those two remain at the top despite so many more expansions coming out in the interim. The more things change, the more they stay the same!

The Big Box version comes with Base and Intrigue. Really got me into the game. I just got Empires for my birthday this year. I'm really excited for it as its my first expansion. I really want to get Prosperity just because so many people rave about it.

I love Dominion. Thank you so much for doing this breakdown. I’d love a series of breaking down each box and your top and least favorite cards. Would also love some kingdom card set recommendations:)

Wanted to drop a comment to say you've been a great help in deciding what expansions to get for me and my family. We've been having a blast playing with platinum and colonies from Prosperity. Plan to pick up Seaside next. What's great coming from someone who didn't play this when it came out, there's 15 expansions that I can trickle in and infuse variety back in once it starts to get stale. Such an incredible game!

As someone in the dominion competitive scene who started playing circa 2017 when Nocturne was released, it's interesting to see a different perspective. I think the 2e update packs, at least for prosperity and hinterlands, are essential! Souk, Trail, and Charlatan in particular are so much fun, and really elevate their respective set for me (tho I disagree with the decisions about which hinterlands cards to remove. RIP Silk Road.)

My favorite sets are actually Menagerie and Plunder. They add more cards to the game than any other sets, and at a high level they push for more-varied strategies; in 2018, the best strategy on nearly every board was to use villages and simithies or similar cards to draw your whole deck and try to buy two provinces per turn. Menagerie added a bunch comboey cards making funky synergies more frequent. The loot cards in plunder made it so you could still do a lot on your turn without drawing your whole deck.

I'm curious about your comment that allies was a simpler expansion then renaissance or menagerie. The allies and the split piles were hard for me to wrap my head around at first.

I do agree, though, that alchemy and Nocturne are the worst, but for different reasons than you I think. I don't like the feeling, in lots of nocturne games, that I won or lost because of the hexes. With Alchemy, it's really unfun to get possessed, and a bunch of the potion-cost cards (namely transmute and Philosopher's stone) really don't justify buying a potion.

This video came out at the perfect time! I've been playing Dominion for around a year at this point and absolutely love it! With my birthday coming up soon I wanted to get my first expansion but had no idea where to start! There's a lot to think about here, but I'm sure whichever I get I will absolutely love it :)

I just wish the boxes were smaller. It’s Labour to bring even a single box to game night

Very helpful video! Seaside and Prosperity are my favorite expansions right now, but I have only played 5 expansions total. I can't believe they removed my favorite card (Embargo) from the 2nd edition of Seaside. That's a travesty!!!

Great video, this has really helped me with my decision making as I've been getting into Dominion. My girlfriend and I have been playing this like crazy, so far with only base game 1st edition and intrigue 2nd edition. I bought a box with seaside 1ED, prosperity 1ED, cornucopia, and alchemy that we're waiting to start using once we feel the game needs a breath of fresh air.

You seemed to say you play every Dominion game with landmarks. That makes me feel like I should get Empires. I'm definitely intrigued by the landmarks!

I just bought a used 1st edition prosperity! One of the most fun plays I’ve done is, buy as many coppers as possible and then get the counting house card (let’s you put all coppers in your discard pile into your hand) and then bank (+1 money per each treasure card.) I was able to buy 2 colony cards in one turn!! A little disappointing they took out the counting house card in the second edition

Seems like your wife likes copper strategies, apothecary and stables are great actions to help utilize coppers, and maybe worth buying more.
