Filmmakers Taylor Morden & Zeke Kamm follow the manager of the world’s sole remaining Blockbuster in Bend, OR, Sandi Harding, as she reflects on the store's vibrant past and navigates the difficult task of keeping a video rental store open in the era of streaming. Taking us through the history and subsequent rise and fall of the franchise, the documentary reveals the real reason why Blockbuster went out of business (hint - it wasn’t Netflix), while celebrating the unique and defining culture it created in the ‘90s, honoring a simpler times and the sense of community that could once be found in Blockbuster locations across the world.

Featuring interviews with comedians and celebrities with ties to Blockbuster: Adam Brody (“The O.C.”, Jennifer’s Body), Ione Skye (Say Anything, River’s Edge), Doug Benson (“Getting Doug with High”, The Lego Batman Movie), Paul Scheer (“The League”, “Veep”) and director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob), with narration by Lauren Lapkus (The Wrong Missy, “Orange Is The New Black”).

I worked at a Blockbuster in the 90s, it was the only job I ever had, before or since, that was like a family. The pay sucked (minimum wage was like $4.50) and some of the customers where spawned from hellfire in another realm, but other customers were amazing and our "crew" really clicked and worked well together. We hung out together, threw parties, celebrated weddings, birthdays and new babies, and now, 20+ years later, most of is keep in touch in a Facebook group. I can't say that about any other job.

This is coming to Netflix this month. They're officially dabbing on blockbuster's dead body.

There's something special about everyone having to wait for a "rent-able copy" to be available for be renting.
Physical Movies you can actually hold, feels like a "real movie".

Where as everything on TV just feels like a TV show, movie on it or not. It's just not the same feeling.

Owning a hardcopy makes you feel satisfied and proud to own a particular collection of movie.

Just look at Chris Stuckmann's background settings

"Netflix decided to dance on the grave of the company it made obsolete while twisting the knife into its virtually lifeless corpse for good measure by acquiring the rights to the documentary."

Screw that CFO. I do miss the in-store experience. It's like shopping for groceries online, it doesn't work as well. Sometimes I just want to browse (without the algos)!

I miss video rental stores. Browsing the selections (especially the horror section in the 90's) was so much fun :D
Looking up the most gruesome stuff they had or the new Freddy movies...

I'm 33, going on 34 ina few
Blockbuster was my childhood growing up, and even up until the last when they had the 3 movie swap membership where you can watch and swap for more at a monthly price.. I even remember renting the Gaming consoles back when they had the Nintendo 64 in the big plastic case and goldeneye 007 was my game. I miss blockbuster and the smell of the store and all the movies. Great memories
I just rented this documentary on Prime Video

I absolutely miss renting from the store. There was something calming and special about going in and finding the perfect movie to watch.

Remember going to Blockbuster on Friday evenings to rent movies and games? So many people you knew were there, too. We still have a small independent video rental store in our town but it's pretty pathetic.

There are actually two video stores still in operation near me and I hope like hell they corner their niche market and stay around for a long time. I still enjoy supporting them and viewing physical movie selections, and it's also still a great way to sample video games before having to spend $80 on one.

It is just sad, I hope when the store finally close (hope not anytime soon), someone turn it into a museum, a piece of history.
