I bought a Peavey stereo chorus 2x12 combo in the summer, and the guy also mentioned he had a Boss HM-2 and a Peavey distortion pedal. He gave me both pedals for $10.00, I kid you not. The HM-2 is a black label made in Japan model. Surprisingly it was in really great shape. The only thing about it was someone swapped the orange control knobs with teal ones. Don't really care as it's taken me almost 30 years to get one again after I sold mine lol.

The key to buying any vintage gear is having a very understanding wife. This past summer I stumbled on a 1951 Gibson J-50 for less than one third of its appraised value. It was listed on a Monday morning, and I happened to be home that day. For once I was in the right place at the right time.

Cool topic! I got a 66 Pro Reverb earlier this year. Got it in a trade for a 62 Magnatone 440. I literally found the Magnatone a few years ago in a trash pile, spent about 150 to get it working right, never played it much but cool amp with built in vibrato. I also put about 200 into the pro so 350 all in - and a lot of time - for the 66 pro. I love the pro, play it all of the time! A bit of luck here, probably not a repeatable strategy!

Great tips. Found a 2x12 cabinet with Vintage 30’s from someone moving out of state. A week later, he texts me to meet him on his way out of town. He GAVE me a vintage 60’s Premier Tube Reverb unit and some other miscellaneous parts. Shook my hand and said “have fun”!

I have one of those Rivera Concerts from ‘82 that I had modded into just a head from its original 4x10 combo. Absolutely incredible sounding amp!

Thanks, Mason. It's helpful seeing your process. It seems to me a lot of why you spot good deals is because you have a very deep well of knowledge and experience. The general lay person looking for gear (speaking for myself) would have far less of a clue if something was a great deal or not. I suppose if you're looking for something specific and you've researched the prices on ebay and such, it could be very helpful. I really enjoy all the great tips on your channel.

At 12:05 you hit on a Rivera that has a "Precision Audio Tailoring" plate on the front grill. This was Jeff Bober's (Budda fame) first amp mod/repair business, so this amp was likely modded by Jeff who has great ears for amp mods.

My two best vintage scoops are an all original 1969 Bassman Amp and cab for $800 and a 76 Gibson ES-345 in player grade for $2100.

A had a few great gear purchases over the years off Reverb.

I have a 90's korean made Marshall Guv'nor I bought for $200 7 years ago.

Around the same time I also bought a Dunlop Rotovibe in like new conditiom for $150. They're between $300 and $500 now

I picked up a Visual Sound Visual Volume for $125 that a music shop on Toronto was clearing out on their Reverb store.

I've found hardwired replicas of hard to find pedals through builders taking orders in Reverb and Ebay.

My main Guitar is a 1973 Gibson SG standard I bought for $600 off Kijiji (like Craigs list in Canada). It had the dreaded headstock repair. I was shown pics of the repair before they applied the finish. I could tell it was done correctly, so I snatched it up when everyone else was running away. Best guitar I have ever owned.

Thanks for the advice! A lot of great information. I am actually moving away from tubes because of maintenance, technology advancements, and cost. Solid state heads have come a long way and are much lighter and smaller but can easy drive a large or small cabinet. Since the introduction of IRs, topology software, and DAW advancements I can get almost any sound recording and live.
