Close Up with a Banana Slug

Banana slugs fill an important ecological niche in our forest ecosystems. As they slowly move across the ground and the low-lying vegetation, they consume bits of dead organic matter and excrete a nitrogen-rich fertilizer that nourishes forest plants.
