Please Dave. Every time you preface your statement by saying "I paid for school and worked" it's extremely frustrating. College tuition has risen nearly 300% in the last 30 years while the median wage has pretty much stayed the same. Come on.

This might be in the 2% of times I disagree with Dave. When I was in college, I had no choice but to work and support myself - Dad was in the slammer and poor Mom was an emotional wreck. I worked a lot and took a full load, but there are downside negative consequences to all this. I also got sick A LOT, had a very poor diet and was often very depressed and ALMOST gave up (not just on school but on everything if you get my drift). The success story is that I didn't and things turned out OK, but I almost killed myself trying to do it all. I would recommend NOT doing this just to avoid having to take out some loans.

I work at a public university. The key to what Dave is saying, is: "Go to a school you can afford." Start at a community college if you must, that will save thousands. Its totally possible to work your way through college and graduate debt free IF you attend an affordable institution.

70% of undergraduates currently work. Up from 25% in 1960. So not sure why he makes it out like no one is working in college.

I usually agree with Dave Ramsey but I admire those kids flipping burgers. If they don't cook or serve and work there who will. There is nothing wrong with flipping burgers. I have lived on minumum wage forever it is not the amount of money you make it is how you handle what you do make. I seem to have more money saved living under 20, 000 a year then a lot of people have making over 100, 000. Don't knock what people make it. Sometimes these people are more successful.

I was a self-employed electrician when I was in college. I paid for my entire 4-year degree with NO debt!

The part I find funny about Dave's advice is that he thinks there are a lot of competent, well meaning AND financially literate parents in the USA.

FAFSA is used for more than loans. You can qualify for grants and scholarships from the schools you apply to based on the info provided there. Financial aid offices require you to fill one out. It doesn't mean you have to take out loans. I wish he'd stop steering people away from it completely...especially if you are low-income. It was how I was able to go to community college debt-free.

I used to be a snowflake that didn't work after highschool (although I didn't go into debt with a student loan) but thankfully I wised up and got to work at around 19. Now at 26 I just bought my first house with 20% down and my mortgage is the only debt I have. I don't make a lot but I budget well it can be done by pretty much anyone.

I worked throughout college - graduated with $1, 000 in the bank, no loans. It was hard, but worth it.

This is incredibly short-sighted. In many college majors, it's literally impossible to work AND go to school at the same time, because the programs demand so much of your time.

I agree 100% with Dave on this issue. Too many snowflake parents raising "snowflake" kids. Work builds character and is NOT child abuse.

I wouldn't have made it through my Computer Science/Math based degree if I was working. I would have gone bonkers.

This did not age well. With inflation the way it is most people work 40+ hours just to make ends meat.

I worked 40+ hours a week. 3 to 4, 12 hour shift while I was in nursing school and still couldn’t afford to be at that school. How else do you think I afforded to graduate? I took out loans. I can’t agree with Dave about his views on working students. Some of us are hard working millennials and not the snowflakes conservatives like pointing us out to be.

Not to mention, joining the military just for school is by far one of the dumbest things to do. You join because of a heart and passion and not just for school, especially if there were other options to get educated.

Having any job builds character and aids in developing armor in order to handle adversities!

I am a "snowflake" and I started babysitting at age 12, then worked at age14, under the table at a restaurant. I then worked in a fish market from ages 15-17 gutting fish and shelling clams. I continued to work about 25 hours a week through high school and was also a student athlete. I then worked three part-time jobs while I went to college full-time. I have ALWAYS worked hard. Your assumptions that our generation and those who are liberal-minded don't have a strong work ethic is pretty insulting. When you assume...you make an...you know the rest.

Wow. Way to generalize an entire generation. 😡 Some of us worked 60-80 hours a week between 3 jobs, plus 22+ credit hours. Not everyone has the luxury of scholarships, or parents that have money. Glad your family could afford a tutor for your kids and the $ to continue paying for those tests. I had a mix of scholarships, grants, and loans in order to go to school. But calling us snowflakes bc we have loans is a gross generalization. Came to your channel to listen to advice on how to get out of debt, only to find that you continue to put people down while you charge them an exorbitant fee to take your class. I think I will be asking a family member who is debt free for advice from now on.

Stopped going to college for a while because I was borrowing more money than I was making. I was working and going to school but neither of those places wanted to work together. And then I didn't even know what I wanted to do when I got out. I've been paying off the student loans I've borrowed and will be saving to go to community college for an Associate once I figure out what I want to do.
