Stuttering affects around 70 million people worldwide. A recent study shows that a decreased blood flow to the Broca area of the brain plays part in this condition.

This was fascinating! :)
I knew Delayed Auditory Feedback could be a speech jammer, but didn't know it helped those who stutter :)

A fun fact in return for all the interesting information in this video: did you know cicadas use the Helmholz effect to be SO LOUD? :p

I discovered this on my own a while ago, and I never thought to research if it was a scientifically proven thing or not. It's nice to see it's not just a placebo effect. When I play with my Pathfinder group over Discord, I route my microphone through my headphones at a 200ms delay and it really reduces my stuttering.

Came here from Tom Scott, fantastic work and thank you for good well researched videos. Here is one at least that notice your citations. Keep it up and us nerds will flock to you in the end. Here is one at least marathoning through your whole playlist.

Great video! I love it! And even as an audio engineer I didn't know about the experiment of recording a recording of a recording to reveal the resonant frequencies! Although you would need a flat frequency response microphone, and a flat frequency response speaker to get the true, accurate room's resonants.. these are actually speaker's, microphone's and room's resonant frequencies combined into one, but it is a great thing to know!

Great video, it was very interesting!
I'm one who stutters, but very intermittently, often going quite a while without a hick up. Stuttering for me is mostly stress related.
Anyway, DAF has the same effect on me as it does on people who don't stutter, as in makes it completely impossible for me to speak. My brain has it's own strategies to cope. Usually when I'm close to stuttering I instead flip the order of some words I'm speaking so the word that is giving me trouble either jumps a few steps further down the sentence or ends up completely at the end of it. By the time I speak the word, it has properly been processed and it comes out without additional problems. It's done completely subconsciously so I don't need to focus on what I'm trying to say.

A few years ago I made a discovery about myself and the way I speak. I was an actor in a low budget production for Swedish television and at one point during shooting my mic wasn't recording as well as expected, which wasn't noticed until way later during post production. So I had to come in, re-record my lines. Matching my emotion, speech, tempo etc so that it was perfectly synced with my lips in the previously recorded video. It was then that I noticed the strange rhythm and pattern of my the way I spoke. It was an interesting and self insightful moment for me.
I realized that I speak almost as if I'm having a slow hiphop beat in the background of my head; and that the flipping of words mid sentence, that I'm doing, was my brain's way of rearranging the sentence to fit that rhythm/beat so that everything in my head stayed synchronized.

And while on the subject. Someone that I find extremely interesting and impressive is the artist Scatman John who, in the song Scatman, sings about stuttering.
I can't really tell that he had severe stuttering problems by listening to the singing, but you can clearly tell how it was the inspiration for the song, and I don't just mean the spoken lyrics.
