I think we choose our favorite authors and they choose us. The greatest works we’ve never read are out there but it’s up to us to take the first step

I’m not even the biggest reader, but watching these videos makes me fall back in love with reading. I really hope this community thrives and the channel grows to the size it deserves to be.

I really think that the Author chooses the audience to enjoy their work and the audience chooses the author they enjoy the most. The more I think about it the more I am fascinated about the concept

I think this is great for beginners in classic literature, like me, who want to simplify and relate to some archetypes created by these authors. For example, watching your video specifically made me want to read more of Virginia Woolf and Jane Austen based on the one-word descriptions. It might even be the case that both the author and the reader choose each other. The only difference is that the author knows they chose us, while we are mostly unaware that we have been chosen.

I think we choose the authors we see ourselves in, whether it's their writing (subject, style, characters) or the author themselves.

Mark Twain and Alexandre Dumas -- between the two of them they cover most of what's important to me.

I'm currently reading Les Miserables by Victor Hugo and while I do love other classical authors like Oscar wilde and H.G Wells etc. I think that in this case, the author chose us, chose themselves and we chose them.

They chose us: they wrote their story for us to read and emphasize with, sometimes having a character that is from our background dealing with societal pressures (example Jean valjean was convicted for stealing a loaf of bread because he was poor and now the corrupt justice system is after him).

They chose themselves: they wrote what they believe is the truth, shared their views of life and what should be done. (Example, Victor wrote the novel because he saw the cruelty of what was happening to poor people and he often tried to help others so he wrote the book les miserables so others understand what less fortunate people deal with).

We chose them: We found someone who shares the same beliefs, values etc in literature and it's rewarding to know that someone else values these besides ourselves. (Like Hugo, I have deep empathy for those who are in hardship and that I shouldn't look down upon them.)

Therez a reason why literature is also called "Humanities, " and I find it amazing that even though reading is a recent thing we achieved and therefore unnatural, we still find ways to socialize and relate to each other in this way despite these authors being dead for more than half a century (or more).

As someone who knows and read many of these classic author's books I can tell why I resonate with them

Albert Camus is my fave, something about his writing and themes of presence and acceptance resonate with me and feel like it’s often misunderstood. I think the way you put it as “unbothered” by the absurdities that life throws at you is accurate though! I especially enjoy his non-fiction works.

According to Sarah Bakewell’s “At the Existentialist Cafe”, Simone de Beauvoir and Sartre called Camus a “simple, cheerful soul” who was funny and charismatic in conversation with others yet very sensitive and emotional on his own as the type to “sit in the snow on the street at 2am pouring out his love troubles” and that was the most relatable thing I’d read in while 😅

Hesse, Huxley, and Camus are probably my top 3 authors ever.

I think we recognize the specific portrayal of the human condition the author establishes and resonate with it, and then we connect to the prose and style of the author. My favorite classical authors are William Faulkner and Herman Hesse, but I will argue that Anne Carson should be added to the classical canon in our lifetime.
