The whole movie is dedicated to, and is pretty much about, Silk Smitha. Silk Smitha was a real life sex symbol who was really popular in South Indian movies. Actresses used to be quite voluptuous and not very skinny like you see nowadays. I believe they wanted her to emulate that to make the film realistic and representative of what actresses were like back then, so she gained weight for the film. Hope this helps :)
