How to Burn Incense at Home

We Eastern Orthodox Christians love our incense. Fortunately, incense is not only for use in church, but can be used at home as well. This video shows how to light the charcoal and burn the incense. For a cleaner, non-charcoal option, scroll down to the bottom of this Description.

Supply Links
• Censers, charcoal, and incense can be purchased from Holy Cross Monastery in Wayne, WV.

Some of my favorite incense scents are Damask Rose, Byzantium, Old Church, Nazareth, Evergreen and Embers, and Catacombs.

NO CHARCOAL OPTION?

I am also a catechumen awaiting chrismation, and one of the many things I deeply enjoy about my new faith is how we give praise to the Lord using all of our senses.

Sometimes I add some of the ash on top of the lit charcoal. This provides a layer of protection for the incense, it burns more smoothly and it doesn't boil. Thanks for the video.

I wouldn’t have thought about placing the incense around the coal! Genius!

You can actually burn incense without charcoal as well, in a burner that has a candle at its base and an incense holder on top. If open fire catches the incense it will ruin it, but if only the heat of a candle reaches it, the incense will begin to release its fragrance and a bit of smoke, less than with charcoal.

Some Orthodox add bay/laurel leaves as a gesture evoking Christ's Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. Usually 4 leaves are placed in the censer, prior to the lit charcoal and incense, in cruciform with their points extending from beneath the charcoal pellet/s; one tip at each point: north, south, east, west.

I just got myself some incense and an incensor but I didn’t realize I needed charcoal. That helps!

I grew up in a house afraid of fire, so can't do charcoal. But I respect your consideration for people with respiratory issues. God be with you.

That was great and straightforward! I've been wondering how to do it. The only time I tried there was a huge mess of smoke. Thanks for this!

Thank you for your very informative video, we have tried several times to burn incense on charcoal, ending up with a room of chocking smoke, so your video has highlighted our errors..
Thank you again and may you live in peace
