John Donne was an 18th century poet and philosopher, his most famous words here written in 1624. The poet coins the phrase 'no man is an island' to highlight that all human life is interconnected, and that we share responsibility for each other.

I remember having to learn this poem in 4th grade for a kids Mensa project. When I preformed it in front of the entire fourth grade class I wept, as this poem meant so much to me. Even though it meant so little to the other kids in my class. I’ve never told my parents that story. So here YouTube.

A couple of friends and I were talking about music and what songs give us goosebumps. I mentioned that poetry causes the same reaction, and remembered this poem. This poem is one of the first times I remember getting goosebumps. "It tolls for thee" has also been known to choke me up if I'm an a melancholy state of mind. Such a beautiful poem.
