Why don't some muslims shake hands?

There are many misconceptions surrounding Islam. One of them is that muslim don't shake hands with the opposite gender because they believe that women are filthy. But is that really true? Or are there other explanations for this?

This hadith from al-Tabaraani in al-Kabeer:

It was narrated that Ma’qil ibn Yassaar said: the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “For one of you to be stabbed in the head with an iron needle is better for him than that he should touch a woman who is not permissible for him.”

Narrated by al-Tabaraani in al-Kabeer, 486. Shaykh al-Albaani said in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 5045, that this hadeeth is saheeh.

In Islam Man should lower their gaze when woman approaches. In Islam you cannot touch a Non mahram. This is the beauty of Islam

I hope this will reach more "offended" people who will take it into consideration because I too am offended when a male offers me a handshake. It's my choice, my right, and my duty to not accept it. Every time this happens, I'm thinking: "Isn't my veil an obvious sign that you as a man should keep a respectful distance from me?"

All sane muslims ignore some of the most bizzare commands of their religion. Like no sane muslim will allow marriage with a girl before she has her fist period (12-14 year old), however it is explicitely allowed in Islam.

Or marry second cousine, which is too allowe

“And those of your women as have passed the age of monthly courses, for them the ‘Iddah (prescribed period), if you have doubt (about their periods), is three months; and for those who have no courses [(i.e. they are still immature) their ‘Iddah (prescribed period) is three months likewise”
[al-Talaaq 65:4]

So why shaking hand should be any different?

In the East, people generally don't make greeting physical, as in Japan and Thailand. Therefore, your assumption is wrong when you attribute this to one religion. Arguably, in the West too, it's not an old ritual, but imposing it on other cultures on the grounds of the civilized way has been wrong. The only good thing with Coronavirus is that it might put an end to this unhygenic practice.

My father always told me it was because of something to do with them wiping their ass and if they do shake your hand they are disrespecting you

Not shaking hands, that is not a normal Muslim norm. Go to Turkey, all the women shake hands.

It is quite normal in a Muslim world for women to shake hands.

It is a fundamentalist attitude to insist on not shaking hands with the opposite sex.

So we must also remember that the vast majority of Muslims in Denmark do not subscribe to such a fundamentalist position.
