W tym wspaniałym pałacu nikt nie jest szczęśliwy.
1. Ahmed jest władcą, ale nie wie, komu może zaufać. Nawet ci, którzy są mu oddani, mają tajemnice.
2. Kosem jest ulubienicą sułtana i kocha go, ale wie, że Ahmed będzie miał inne kobiety. Jedna z nich jest w ciąży, a jeśli urodzi syna, stanie się najważniejszą z kobiet sułtana.
3. Handan jest oddana synowi, ale nadopiekuńcza i słaba. Daje sobą łatwo manipulować, przez to popełnia wiele błędów. Traci szacunek Ahmeda.
4. Halime jest żądna władzy, co doprowadzi do choroby umysłowej jej syna.
5. Safiye nie kocha nawet swoich wnuków. Deprawuje charakter córki, bo pragnie władzy w państwie. Nie umie pogodzić się z koniecznością przeprowadzki do Starego Pałacu.
6. Fahriye trzy razy wychodziła za mąż z woli matki za dużo starszych mężczyzn. Teraz jest zakochana, ale znów narzucają jej małżeństwo wbrew uczuciom. To popycha ją do zdrady.
7. Derwisz staje się coraz bardziej wpływowy, ale kocha kobietę, która jest dla niego zakazana. Wie też, że przyszła żona kocha innego, więc trudno byłoby mu znaleźć szczęście w tym małżeństwie. Musi jeszcze ukrywać tajemnicę, która czyni go podatnym na szantaż.
8. Mustafa jest zagrożony śmiercią przez swoje pochodzenie. Doprowadzi to do jego szaleństwa.
9. Mehmed Girey kocha Fahriye, ale ona zostaje wydana za innego.
10. Dilruba staje się coraz bardziej nieprzyjemna, chociaż jest dzieckiem. Pod wpływem matki zaczyna nienawidzić Ahmeda i pragnie tronu dla Mustafy.
