Aral sea | The difficult return of water

preview_player
Показать описание
For millennia the Aral Sea reigned as one of the planet’s largest inland bodies of water, straddling what is now Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Today its decline serves as a cautionary tale.
With help from the government, the World Bank, and scientists, the northern part of the Aral has started to make a recovery.
There are fish in the water again, and for the past four years, fishermen have gathered to celebrate.

“THIS IS WHAT the end of the world looks like,” says Yusup Kamalov.

It must be mentioned that right now Uzbekistan seems to be the biggest responsible by not cutting the water feed to their cotton fields and keeping diverting the Amur Darya flow. Kazakhstan sacrificed most of their cotton production South of the lake and therefore most of the improvements have happened on the North, on the Kazakh side by partly reverting the flow of the Syr Darya to the lake. Sorry if someones feeling get bruised but this is not a random outcome. Uzbekistan produces 12 times more cotton than Kazakhstan right now 1.106 million tons... The global average virtual consumption of seed cotton is 3644 m3/ton, so do the math. If you want to visualize, it is a volume equivalent to 15, 500 Q-MAX tanker ships full of fresh water ...

I was involved in the world bank project to build the first permanent dam as fisheries specialist. The macroeconomic justification for the project depended on returns from the fishery so very happy to have made a small contribution to turning round this project in an amazing part of the world!

This is why we fight every proposal to withdraw water from the Great Lakes (between US and Canada). We wish you every good fortune in trying to recover from this disaster.

Fun fact: Google map didn't update the drying of Aral sea until around 2014. I made a screenshot of the map and the satellite image at the time, with the map showing the lake reaching muynak while in reality it was 100km away, in other words, it was 30 years out of date.

Sad part...it’s happened in the US too. Look at how we (California) overuses the Colorado river and the effects in lower AZ and MEXICO

Thanks for your effort.
Few knew that aral is decreasing in size, I am one of them.
Everyone can know about this, by adding this in every school syllabus worldwide. This is you who brought this idea. Lots of respect. One minute explore.

I remember learning about in Geography in school and it really bothered me that people could destroy something like that to grow crops that were not suited to the region. Seeing the knock on effects of the salt and dusts storms and the pesticides in this video shows house much of an F up it was. Glad to see there are some efforts in place to restore it.

I first saw about it 6-7 years ago, maybe on BBC or Discovery. From then it has become close to my heart and I keep checking this every year.
Once you know about Aral Sea it will go out of your heart.

The story of the Aral Sea really should be taught in schools to further stress the importance of good water management

In western media it's usual to blame Soviet Union for the Aral sea disaster, which is partially true, but now Uzbekistan is doing nothing to save and protect Aral. Instead, Uzbekistan
1) established cotton mafia in Karakalpakstan and growing so much cotton, and exporting it to other countries and gaining a lot of revenue)
2) extracting gas and oil from the seabed
3) keeps the water of Amudaria in Muynak and thus letting the Aral sea die
4) abuses money granted by UN, EU and other international organisations to ameliorate life in Karakalpakstan and solve the Aral sea crisis. What Uzbekistan government likes to do is always blaming Soviet Union, while uz itself has stolen so much money given by international organisations. Ecosystem (salt and dust storms, desertification, pesticides, herbicides), water quality (saline) and health conditions didn't improve in Karakalpakstan. Uzbekistan is lying to the world presenting itself as a victim of Soviet Union, while Uz itself is just oppressing and worsening life and heavily assimilating Karakalpaks in Karakalpakstan.
