Minifigure Storage Heads

So I have these two LEGO minifigure storage heads, but what should I put inside?

try to fill that groove space with something so its nice and smooth

We have a couple of the ones that have the sorting feature, ever tried one of those?
I like your idea of putting in brick separaters but you could also put big bulky/panel type legos in them. (Not the plain large plates I doubt they would fit)

put a mat on the inside.. lay it flat on the bottom
